Having seen the photo's of Porrige. my mare does not travel well so I would like to take the partition out. I will get a solid breast bar for the front but do I need to get one made for the back or can I use a covered chain?

My YO doesn't use a breech bar at all when travelling, she says "I never have and never will" - I never used a breech bar with my old trailers, but I got one when I ordered the full breast bar for this one, so will use it as I have put it in now!

I'v travelled horse with and with out. The ifor williams trailer at the front was a bit thin (not made for horse to travel there) so did have breast bar. Horses do tend to stay still. Always did the top doors up at the back if loose.

If we travelled without a parition, we used a solid (full length) breast bar. Didnt have a back bar though, although if we needed one (ie. with a "reverser"!) we hooked together 2 of the usual back partition bars. Probably safer to get a back bar made I guess.

I was just wondering this. My trailer already has a full length breast bar, but not a back one. Wasn't sure whether it was needed or not.

I never used a breech bar on my old Ifor, just a breast bar so I asked IW when I bought a new trailer and they said they had to reccomend both, I suppose its incase your horse sat on the ramp and somehow broke the fastenners and the ramp coming down???

I would personally use a breast bar. I once had to break sharper then I'd have liked to on the M6 and my boy bent the breast bar connection. Without a bar there though, I hate to think what would have happened.

Safer to get both

You need one at the front, as if you brake sharply you risk damaging the horses neck & face, rather than their breast, which whilst not ideal, has a good fleshy part

I would always use a back bar, as it stops them from ever having a rubbed tail (never need a tail guard now). Also safety if you have one rush out as a few people have been killed by the tail gate & horse trampling them.
