travelling without partitions

I've just bought a 3yo who apparently travels quite well. He was bought over from Holland recently so has been on a ferry before.
I'm looking to bring him to where I live in the Channel Islands on a ferry. It might be a few hours drive followed by a few hours on a potentially slightly bumpy boat. I'm trying to decide whether to take the partition out so he can lie down while he's on the boat (it's a luton size box) but slightly worried about poss getting cast etc.
Just wondering if anyone else travels without a partition, especially on longer trips? I'm not sure it's a good idea but will be interested to see what you think.
 
He might be safer tied up in the narrower partition, if it's calm you could open it up to a good width. I don't think I would leave one loose if it's rough, but that's pure speculation, I've never travelled one on a boat.
Why not post on the comp forum, people on there travel abroad?
 
surely if you open the partition wide he could lie down and then wouldn't there be a worry that he might get his legs stuck under the partition! Of course depends on partitions but IMO either keep them in and use them normally or take them out. I've never travelled without though so, sorry but can't comment on that.
 
Really not sure. But my advice would be to speak to an international horse transporter for advice. Lots advertise in HHO.It might be better to go down through France by road and then do a shorter hop across by ferry. Im sure a big company could give you better advice.

i don't think he'd lie down in there anyway, but if you want to give him extra room, why not?
i use to travel my advanced mare in a 3-horse box with no partitions. she appreciated the extra space and didn't kick half as much, fwiw.
 
i would be very surprised if the ferry company would allow you to travel the animal loose, unles you have a full height solid partition, which would mean the horse is in an enclosed area.

Would agree, think its unlikely he'll lie down. I brought mine across to Ireland on the ferry last year and opened the partitions as far as poss. so they had more room to balance. I find mine are better with the extra space.
