My mare gets quite watery eyes, particularly in summer though occasionally at other times of the year. Mostly it just runs a bit, her inner corner looks a tiny bit pink, and it will sometimes have a crust, like sleep, just on the skin surrounding her eye - presumably where it has run then dried on her skin.

The vet gave me some cream last year to use when it gets very bad, but I was wondering what the best regime is for it? If at all possible I keep them out 24/7 in summer as a) it saves me a fortune and b) my mare has RAO so I'd rather she was out if possible. Her eye does get much worse if there are flies around, as they get attracted to the water which makes the whole thing worse :(

I have tried a mask but she kept rubbing with this on, and I worried that she would damage her eye. I then tried a fly fringe but she kept pulling it off! She's going to wear a grazing muzzle this year anyway, so not sure I could keep a mask on as well

Just wondering whether I should be washing her eye daily, if so with what - just plain water? Or will that just keep irritating it more.

(On re-reading my post, I just want to be clear that if her eye looked bad she'd always come inside! But I want to try to get ahead of the curve this year to try to keep it comfortable for her!)

Poor girl :(

Not knowing properly the problem i don't wish to suggest anything but i used barrier animal health eye lotion on one horse and it worked wonders.
It could be something different so it is just something to enquire about should you be interested in trying it. Maybe a phonecall to your vet to make sure it is suitable.

are her tear ducts working and draining? might be worth getting the vet to flush them through , when on his next routine visit! cold tea is good to wash eyes off with , though use separate non fluffy pads on each eye to avoid any cross over if bugs present. or very weak saline solution. tho eyes should be self cleaning so wouldnt wash if not required.

Hiya, both my 16.2hh wb x tb and my heinz 57 pony have just started suffering from watery eyes. My wb x tb has it persistantly in one eye at the moment. Vet told me on a routine visit last week that its just a reaction to the pollen so not to worry about it. The only thing i can tackle it with is a fly mask. x x
