Hi our dartie came in on friday not lame but when feeling front leg mild heat on front of leg about 4 inches above fetlock joint.

Cold boot / iced etc and leg swelling completely gone, no heat, no obvious lump but when i feel i can tell still slight raise to normal leg but very slight.

Not worked him - do i wait until bump completely gone or do i start light work and see how he goes?

He is our number one show pony so cant afford to do things wrong.

any advice>

I would carry on with cold hosing or ice packs. I used ice packs that are a neoprene wrap sold for humans and they work a treat. Beats standing there with a hose because the leg does not get drenched which can lead to other problems.

You are worried about a splint forming... knocks in the field, or even the horse knocking itself are both a cause of these.

I would get the vet to ensure that it is not a fracture, and take their advice.

A splint from a knock is not a drama unless it interferes with the action of a joint. If all is straight forward, and the vet agrees, you can start treating the lump with Splintex. This is used by lots of showing bods for lumps and bumps.

Hi, thanks for your reply - i think his leg is about back to normal but given him another day off just incase.

Hi, had vet to check and he has bruised his tendon so cold water treatment but continued exercise and hopefully will dissapear but may take a few weeks.
