Treatment for lice

My friends cob has lice. She,s itched the fence over and escaped today! Had a look in her mane and I can see very small grey/brown creatures. She's itching all over but on a quick inspection can only see them in her mane. She has got mud fever too which maybe why she's scratching her legs?

Anyway,My friend will be calling the vets for advice, but in the mean time is there anything we can do? Anything we can scrub her with or spray on?

Also, how likely is it to spread? My mare has been in the field with her since Friday night. I've looked her over and cant see any but should I do anything?

There is stuff you can use to give your pony a de-louse but I can't remember the name of it - others on here will be able to advise better than me. First treatment kills the lice but not the eggs from what I understand, so you do it again about 10 days later to get the remaining ones that will have hatched in the meantime.

Everything the horse has come into contact with in terms of tack, grooming stuff etc will need to be cleaned using de-lousing powder as they can spread like wildfire.

Keep an eye on your mare - she may well have caught them

Went through this back end of winter - moved boy into new field, unfortunately after a little while I realised both other residents were infested and so he got them too. Treated them all with louse powder for a while, made no difference...got some Cooper's Fly/Lice treatment from vet's and treated them all, hey presto problem solved.

Definitely. But you must treat every horse who has been in contact with the lousy one - also treat any rugs (they can be well plastered in any standard louse powder and folded up - onto the powder - for a coupe of days.)

Treat again in 3 weeks!

i tried powders and shampoo in the end my guy had to have 2 sets of injections as the first set didnt work
glad to say he is fine now, i did buy coopers tho just to make sure

My vet told me to use Coopers Spot On which is for cattle and sheep. Only had to use it a couple of times for a new pony. They gave me a 10ml dose with the instructions to avoid the saddle area 'just in case of an adverse reaction'.

Wormers with ivermectin in can help get rid of the little buggers lol
