Treatments for rain scald?

Just wondering what peoples preferred treatments for rain scald are? My mares just began to get some on her neck/face and the vet suggested a type of cream which they sell but it costs a fortune!:o read somewhere that you can us diluted listerine?:eek:
 
My pony had it after one warm very wet autumn and lots of rolling when I was away for a week with work and he'd not been groomed. The vet recommended Malaseb shampoo to help loosen the sticky scabs and deal with the bacteria and once I'd got them off I would dry his coat thoroughly by dabbing with kitchen towel and then apply aloe vera gel as was very soothing as he was very irritated by how the scabs pulled on his hair/skin. He found the gel less irritating than me rubbing in cream. Took forever to do every day as he had a lot of tiny scabs through his coat. He was in for about 2-3 days until his coat had thoroughly dried and then out rugged up lightly.
 
as its on the top of her neck going onto her face how would you recommend I keep it dry in this rainy weather?:o keeping her in full time isn't something i'd be keen to do..she has a full neck rug, but it only comes about 3/4 up her neck..
