Looking for recommendations for treats I could use for doing carrot stretches please. I would prefer some that are low in sugar and starch. I don't find that carrots work very well for my horse so I usually use Bailey's fibre nuggets which do work well although I don't use loads of them and am finding that half a bins worth are going mouldy and are getting thrown away.

I have clicker trained mine to touch a target (supplement lid) so I use that as the target for the stretch then reward with a teeny bit of carrot.

More effort at first but less in the long term.

I think I have Baileys Meadow Herb treats at the moment. With my old horse carrots worked best as he had huge lips and I didn't quite trust him to only get the treat. I used to cut it in skinny lengths, so one carrot was about 10 treats.

I used to use sugar free polos and the spillers meadow herb and apple treats, they last forever and if you are strong you can snap them in half!
Lari never used to snatch treats so he was easy to treat (although I did have issues for the first couple of weeks of groundwork, as he used to get a bit nippy) Bailey was very polite, would never try to go in your pockets, was infinitely patient and would take a tic tac from between your lips with her lips as she was so gentle.

I use a small horselyx tub that only comes out for carrot stretches. It's not low sugar at all but Charlie was really muggy and even ripped one of my pockets looking for treats so a no hand feeding rule had to be introduced. Because this was that much bigger, he knew when I had it or not so didn't go looking for it all the time and it meant my fingers were safe too. I just carried it on with Wiggy when Charlie went and he arrived. One lick lasts about a year so I'm not bothered about how much sugar Wig's getting and at 30, Arch is allowed whatever the hell he likes but isn't that fond of it!
