Hello

I am looking to buy a treble trailer (two horse / one pony) and was wondering if anyone had one and what their experience was. My car can tow up to the full 3500 so size/weight is not an issue.

Also how much am I looking to get one secondhand (condition needs to be immediately driveable but I'm happy to do cosmetic work)? And does anyone know of any for sale?

Thanks.

I think equitrek make one and there are some fautras that carry 3 but be carefull some of the continental made trailers are over uk width ... 2.3 mtrs or 7ft6

Thank you. I am aware of the various makes (Rice, Richardson, Wessex, Equitrek etc) but am looking for people's experiences of the various brands etc.

I have a rice 3 horse trailer.
It has always been a bit of a nuisance really!!!Never towed very well with 2 horses on,always felt unbalanced, because the weight was behind the wheels.
However, now i have my horse that wont travel with a partition in,it has been really useful,as i can put the pony up the front, and my mare in the back.
It now tows lovely and i wouldnt be without it.

I saw a pegasus trailer with herringbone partitions and around 5 polo ponies in it the other day. Was trying to work out if that was road legal, but I guess if ponies are 400kg they might just have been providing trailer wasn't over 1.5t unladen!!

Equitrek have bad record of workmanship, so if I wanted a massive trailer, I'd probably go down the pegasus route

Ok I'm sad and was so fascinated I took a photo:

Blimey - not considering that many in it - how on earth do you get them all into position - must be good loaders!!

I didn't know about the Cheval one, will google that now.

Interesting to know the experience re having two in it before might do some research there to see if that's a common problem across the board.

I have a Fautras Oblic 3, the one with no front ramp. Horses load and unload well out the back, no need to use the silly little ramp, and they all travel well. It takes up to 16.2hh and the horses need to be able to turn inside so flexible horses are best! It tows fantastically, must better than my IW511. My friend has the bigger IW and thinks that's great too. I was looking at a Rice treble but decided I would be back end heavy with two on board, and fiddly to use. I love my Fautras! I got it second hand via a local paper. I'd love to upgrade to an Oblic+3 for bigger horses, with front doors if I win the lottery.

Edited to say I scoured the internet without much success for months but they do come up on Horsequest from time to time, and if you register with the British Driving Society (I think that's the correct name) they come up on there as people use them for ponies and carriages etc.

Hi - I have an Ifor Williams 610 - which can travel up to four polo ponies (usually 15hh to 15.2hh) - I have travelled four the odd time but prefer to take only three although I do know some people who regularly travel four. They travel diagonally - the trailer is nice and wide and has a front ramp as well a rear. There is also a storage pod at the front above the jockey wheel. I find they are very stable and seem to tow well and would guess that they are cheaper than the Fautras versions although those do have better look about them!
When I only have one on board I travel her in the middle diagonally above the wheels. I don't know that I would recommend them for horses bigger than 16hh tho and would be intertested to hear if the Fautras gives the bigger horses more headroom.

We have a Rice treble - going to be selling it once my OH organises himself to get it out of the shed and tidied up!

He's a huge fan of Rice - we also have a Rice Badminton (?) the 2 horse trailer with living in the front

All his horses have travelled well in the treble - never used the 3 partition as we don't have ponies :)

I don't know the head room / width for the Fautras trebles but found some for sale tonight on Tally Ho Trailers website. I emailed to ask what size horses the Oblic+3 would take and he replied saying 3 x 16.2 at a push, better for 2 x 16.2 and 1 x 15.2. My problem is I'm looking for something to take a couple of 17.1s plus a 16.2 or a pony. Not sure it will do me then. They also had an Oblic 3 on their used pages.

I saw the Fautras whizzing up and down the motorways in France and one year some French riders brought over 4 horses to Kent behind a Land Rover pick-up. The horses were about 15.00, but they had room for all the tack as well in the front. I know a couple of people locally who have a Fautra and they are very pleased with them.

the Rice will take 2 17.1s plus a pony for definite - if you've got a towing vehicle with the guts to do it lol!

There wouldn't be room for a 16.1 in the 3rd partition area though

I've got a Richardson Supreme III and it's great. Masses of room in it and it tows really well. It was expensive to buy (new) but is imo a lot better than the IW, and I like the fact that the front unload is on the left (verge side) rather than into the road like the IW. I've seen a few 2nd hand at around the ?£2500 mark. Richardson floors are guaranteed for life now (again unlike IW which they have had problems with).

I have an ancient rice 3 horse, never travelled 3 in it but should fit 2 big buggers and a smaller bugger in it easy. Tows brilliant but has land rover wheels (Farrier tells me this, I just nod and smile). I paid £800 for it and we have replaced the floor, welded some new beam thingies underneath and given it a coat of paint (sadly unable to find an exciting colour and it's boring black and silver) so prob paid another £300 max on it.

Thanks all - I would love an expensive one but can't really justify spending nealy £10k although they are lovely.....

I like the look of the Wessex, Rice and Richardson best. I think the Wessex is biggest in terms of being able to take horse height for the three horses but I could be wrong there.

Its a shame they hardly ever come up as I WANT ONE NOW! But I'll be patient and wait i suppose...
