Im off doing something completely different on Saturday to see if it will help the young beasty to get used to different things. But I dont know much about it. I was supposed to be doing it as part of a pair but my fellow pair person fell off her pony on Sunday

and is feeling a bit worse for wear still

and feels she wont be fit enough for it. So my options are either to find another person to do it with or see if I can swap to the individuals.

Can anyone give me any hints/tips?
Ive had a look on the Trec website but it seems as though its normally run over 3 days and the one im off to is only 1 day.

I've done a couple of 'fun' le trecs, but they were a few years ago, so my memory is a bit hazy...

Take a fine red pen or something that is very clear for marking out your route for the orienteering section, and as it's your first time I wouldn't worry too much about the set speeds. I just trotted and cantered where I could and hoped for the best!

For the control of paces it's better to keep in the same pace, so canter as slow as you can without trotting, and then it's a fast walk back.

The obstacles vary depending on the level but you might have to do any of the following:

Lead through a trailer
Lead or ride up and down a hill (don't forget to take reins over the head if you don't use a martingale.
Ride over a bridge
Go over (or through!) a ditch
Do a small jump
Bending - the faster you go the more points you get.
The S-bend - basically uses poles to mark out an S shape which you have to negotiate without knocking them down - take your time for this!
Rein back in a straight line between poles
Open and close a gate - try not to take your hands off the gate whilst you're going through it, as you lose marks every time you take them off.
Mount from the wrong side.
Dismount and have the horse stand about 10 m away without moving outside of a small circle for 10 seconds.

Good luck, it's a lot of fun!!!!

OMG.

Bending - the faster you go the more points you get. - <font color="red"> we might plough through them - wonder if well loose all the points for that!?! </font>
The S-bend - basically uses poles to mark out an S shape which you have to negotiate without knocking them down - take your time for this! - <font color="red"> we can S bend without asking!

Rein back in a straight line between poles - <font color="red"> we can rein back but not normally very straight

Don't panic, you can always miss out some of the obstacles if it's stressing her (or you!) too much!

You've got a few days to practice the mounting and the standing still malarkey... I did the bending in trot as it's marked on time it takes you, and my horse couldn't bend at all in canter, and I didn't want to run over the judge! I didn't get over the jump either.. Standing still was her forte.

I forgot to say as well that in a pair competition you do the orienteering together, but then the COP and obstacles individually, so it doesn't matter if one struggles more than the other.

im actually looking forward to it. My pair person was until I showed her the website and nows shes quite happy shes not going until shes seen what its all about. Im hoping a friend of mine will ride her pony for her but we cant get in touch with them to sort it out.
The canter and walk bit might be a bit of a laugh. Slow canter isnt very good when youve got open space, a young 17.3hh WB who thinks you should gallop everywhere when its open. The waljk should be fine but its the speed of it that might be a prob. Like you say though weve got time to work on it. Is the standing still thing at the end? if so she might just stand there if shes tired!

Have you had a look on the BHS website?

Some more tips here for you:
http://www.bhs.org.uk/DocFrame/DocView.asp?id=203
http://www.bhs.org.uk/Content/Ods-More.asp?id=3676&amp;pg=Competitions&amp;spg=BHS%20TREC&amp;area=7

With the COP think about extending the walk rather than trying to go faster, so that you cover more ground, and vice versa with the canter.

You might have a choice as to what order you do the obstacles, so you could do the standing last, if they are going to including it. Depends on the organisers, but it'll definitely be after the orienteering, so she should be a bit more tired!
