My daughter currently rides her shetland in a felt pad, which she is OK with. However, we are finding that she finds it difficult to stay on when jumping or if he takes off suddenly (we had a bit of an accident the other day). I was wondering if one of these treeless saddles would be any good. The seller says they can be used with a normal girth, stirrups etc and a pad is only needed for a high withered horse (not this Shetland). Does anyone have any experience of these type of saddle. She would want it for being led out, small jumps, riding club etc.

we used to use a cub saddle and when my daughter outgre this we have changed to a griffin pony club saddle with fish which is great for pony and small jocky.. I did try a treeless but didn't like it for either pony or rider.

I've always found the Thorowgood cub saddles good for young riders on Shetlands. Much more secure than the felt pads and helps puts the rider in the correct position.

All those years ago when I was still small enough to ride Shetlands I used to ride in a Thorowgood cub saddle. They seem to stay put great. As I got more experienced I swapped to something similar to a felt pad as I used to do the Shetland Racing and lightweight saddles were vital. I'd definitely look into the cub saddle but keep the felt pad for if or when your daughter outgrows the cub.

it looks quite good, but i've heard wonderful things about the native saddle company's shetland saddles too... which are similar just alot more expensive!

I use a maxam saddle on our shetland which is fab for my pre school daughter but not so good for older children as it 'tips' foward on something with no withers.

The cub saddles are fabulous. Look ugly as sin, but are good. I rate the wintec cub saddle as best, it looks just like mummy's saddle but stays in place and keeps the child in place.

Ok - thanks everyone - my daughter is a big 6 year old - in age 8 to 9 clothing, which is why I had rejected the cub saddles. I have ordered this one to see if it fits OK (crosses fingers!)
