Hi all,

After a kissing spine operation 6 months ago I am struggling to continue to ride my horse due to muscle spasms, regular vet/physio attendance and advice. As I have tried different saddle solution without success I am thinking of trying treeless. Does anyone have any experience or advice using treeless? Pro's and Con's? Many thanks

I think as spinal clearance can be the biggest issue I'd not recommend it, though understand why you're looking at it. Perhaps a non-traditional treed rather than your standard local fitter? Have you tried in hand work like straightness training as KS is usually a symptom of a whole pattern of movement and other minor issues which will need putting right.

Thanks, that is really useful. Yes I have/am doing extensive groundwork/physio exercises to address other issues, working with physio and instructor.

My mare had kissing spine surgery and afterward we went for a new fylde ray(with flocking). It has a wide channel for her spine and good wide panels. Get the best saddler you can find as well. I highly recommend louisa cumoro. Do they know why you are getting muscle spasms?

A well fitting traditional GP saddle with decent sized panels .

My horse C had six dorsal spines removed his xrays where horrifying
He was transformed by the op sadly he went on to get bowel tumours so I lost him anyway .
Are you getting good help with your in hand work ?

The Solution saddles have a very narrow channel (,2") and very firm panels.

I would say that made to measure is unlikely to be necessary unless you need it as a rider, there are quite a few options out there off the shelf which means you may get a ridden trial, made to measure you MAY be offered a trial and be able to get a refund but legally a customised saddle is yours with no option to return.

I would not use a untreed saddle on a horse who had had ks surgery .

I have had both and I wouldn't either.

I used a WOW on mine, which I use on every horse because of the freedom of the shoulders with the movement in the front arch.

Like GS, the operation was a big success but soon after he cracked his head twice and was put down.

..

I wouldn't rule out a Solution saddle. I don't find the panels on mine are hard at all, in fact, just the opposite and it isn't narrow through the gullet either. Maybe I have a different model to Sbloom?

I'm a saddle fitter rather than an owner :), I have seen several and all have been the same but not to say I've seen all models made at all different periods of time. I've just spotted a typo, my earlier post should have read "<2" "

Mine had 4 processes removed and a lig snip. I rode him in his usual wow (refitted) and also tried a Solutions but didn’t really get on with it. Nothing made much difference, either better or worse. It was me who didn’t get on with the Solutions rather than him. There were a load of shims to Velcro to the special saddle cloth and no matter what I did, I couldn’t get it to sit straight or stay straight!

I would recommend a Ghost treeless saddle, fitted by a rep and made on order for your horse, never a used one. In my experience, they are fantastic and stand well above others in their structure, stability and comfort (both for the horse and rider), but they do have to be fitted well. Equine Whispers distribute them in the UK!
