Hi all
This is my very first post here so a quick hello to all and hope i don't sound too silly as i am new to horses.My question is about a decent saddle to fit my 7 year old Dutch warm blood.He is quite big at 169cm(not sure what that is in hands as we live in Spain and things are measured in cm's)and has a very high withers.I have tried a few saddles on him but just can't seem to get one that i feel he is happy with.I came across a second hand treeless saddle from Barefoot Saddles on a Spanish second hand web-site http://www.segundamano.es/valencia/silla-de-doma-montura-barefoot/a15878010/?ca=28_s .They say this saddle would suit a horse with high withers and it helps to eliminate back problems.Has anyone had experience of these saddles.....or should i keep an eye out for a saddle with a tree.Here is a link to the Barefoot product website. http://www.barefoot-espana.com/homeeng.html

I have the Barefoot London which I used on my cob and sometimes on our clydesdale.

It is good for hacking and schooling, but not everyone does like the feel of them. I have used it for local showing and dressage when Chancer was younger and just starting out.

Awful to jump in I found on the one time I attempted it.

You may need to get the pommel for high and wide withers - barefoot do three sizes, narrow, standard and extra wide - for tabletop backs with no withers.

I have used the barefoot on my cob and two clydesdale and all have gone well, the old clydesdale especially loved the barefoot.

Do make sure you get the pad designed for the London model - it is essential that the pad is correct or you can seriously cause problems.

The barefoots are good quality, the best of the cheaper end of the market and final thing, they come in two sizes. If you are a size 14 dress or above you will need the size 2. I have the size 1 and am between a 12 and 14 and for me it is fine, but a friend who is a 14, finds it a bit small.

Hope that helps, as said you will either love or hate it to ride in. My horses have their backs done once a year and the saddle has not caused any problems and does fit them well.
 
Thanks for the advice Theresa.I think i will give the Barefoot a miss as it means going to Valencia to buy with no chance of trying it out before hand.I have tried out a nice size 18 second hand dressage saddle this morning by Zaldi at my stable.The horse seems very happy with it and its very comfortable for me too.
I could fit into a size 14 at a squeeze but i would be very worried about my girlfriend's reaction,but hey! you never know...........

I am borrowing a barefoot at the mo. No idea what modle ut cant ride with stirrups with it as they are situated to far back so feels like im tipping forward all the time

!!. Hopefully will have a nice ew saddle today when saddle fitter comes out, fingers crossed x.
