I seem to be posting a lot recently, must look like a total eejit!

So this a two in one thread ;) Firstly, I need some people to let me know what it's like to ride treeless! After asking Patch's owner (I share him) if she had any other saddles, as his current one is a rubbish fit, she's dug out her treeless one she used to ride him in... but I've never ridden in a treeless. So, is it any different? Are there any tricks of the trade that I should know about? Please let me know your experiences! :D
(Okay, that question probably does make me look like a numpty :o)

Question two, would I be pushing my boundaries if I asked his owner to section off some of the field for Patch? He is in a paddock, around 2/3 acres with 1 sheep and three donkeys but the grass is very rich and lush. Patch is a chubster and although he is losing weight with more excersise, I think he's just putting it back on with the grazing :(. The field could easily be sectioned off for him, leaving him with shelter without restricting any for the donkeys and I have a bucket I could use for his water, he doesn't seem bothered about being away from the others either and with just a bit of electric fencing he can still groom and see them. I'm just not sure if I should ask or if I would be out of line to say anything as she always says how horses naturally put weight on in the summer and lose it in the summer... Patch is obsese and it's not healthy.

Any help with either queries would be much appreciated! :D (I''m sorry my posts are always so long... I do babble!)

Re treeless - they usually need a special pad to get the right fit which is important as otherwise you can get pressure problems. You may need to learn to weight the off-side stirrup as you mount to prevent slippage, and doing up dressage girths is easiest if you slide your leg back instead of forwards. Otherwise, they're great - very comfortable! :)

Treeless isn't so good for people who ride with a lot of weight in the stirrup because it can cause pressure points especially in the cheaper less well made saddles. You may find you can't mount from the ground at all without the saddle slipping. A treeless saddle would probably be better than the other saddle that doesn't fit. Maybe he'll lose weight in the winter and the other saddle would fit again.

If I was the owner I'd think you were interfering if you asked to section the field. She may not want him on his own and has made her feelings clear about his weight. I agree that obese horses are unhealthy but that's the way some owners like them. I've known people feed obese horses in winter because they started losing weight, its crazy.

Sorry that this is not really related but when i saw your title, i laughed and said i'd better tell how silly i am. Now, numpty, is not a word i was familiar with, being from Ireland. A friend of mine has a son, but they relationship didnt last with the dad, this had happened before i met her (she's british). She used to say to me that her son was gone to the numpties, and for about 6 mths, i thought he ex's family surname was Numpty. She had tears rolling down her eyes when we figured it out!!! Really silly me!!

I've ridden in one foul treeless saddle, it was very cheap so I think that properly made ones would be much better :)

but the one I rode in was in two parts attached with Velcro, it was very uncomfortable with a ridge digging in my bum and I'm not sure it was safe because it only had one girth strap and the stirrups attached to the saddle by a metal loop...

The other saddle is far too small for him and is a jumping saddle which doesn't give me the best leg position either, I'm hoping the treeless will be a better fit. And yeah, I was unsure as to if should mention it or not... he is grossly overweight and she knows he's 'fat'. I just don't want to cross the line and lose what may be my last oppurtunity to ride :(

Hahaha! This gave me a giggle :D

I'm not sure what make it is... as I've not seen it yet :o but I'll post a picture later and I'll look out for those stirrups! Thank you :)

The new saddle is a much better fit than his previous one and he seems to move a lot better with it, it's a Trekkers Treeless saddle and as someone posted the stirrup leathers are attached by a D-Ring type thing so they move more (Will have to adjust to that). It's very very comfy though :D Oh! And I got on fine from the floor, no slippage at all :) The seat which comes around the front over the stirrups does come up a little bit, there are rings that it goes through and I was wondering what I could put on there to prevent them coming up?

Some pictures for any advice;

Patch and I are thankful for any comments :D

Other than needing a different pad (a treeless specific one such as Haf/Grandeur/Equitex/etc) to provide spine clearance, and possibly safety stirrups or toe stoppers due to the closed ring stirrup attachment, it looks good! :)

Trekker's not a bad make at all - they've been around for yonks :)

I'm already trying to find these cheaply, I really don't have a lot of money to spend at all... :o

There is a libra numnah on eBay at he moment which would do the job . Think it ends tomorrow and doesn't have any bids. It's twenty quid at the moment. Definitely need a better pad. Could you ask the owner to go halves.

That saddle cloth is only a week old :o And I could but she really doesn't know a lot about horses, I don't want to seem like I'm trying to con her out of money... I'll have a chat with her next time I'm there. Do they have to be specific pads or would a halfpad /gel pad do the same job?

the saddles are expensive but mine is the best thing i ever got (was also having a money madness moment from a lot of savings haha :p). If you go for a cheaper saddle which I WIIL be doing for my now broken in mare. However I would opt for the more expensive pad they provide on this site. Personally I will going to ebay for my next treeless because surely a cheap treeless saddle can't go wrong?? also read lots of hit and miss reviews but majority are good.

The great thing about treeless is it fits everything!! yes you need a special pad but they cost around £25 for a decent one so not exactly killing the bank. Only down side is if your mount has low or non existant withers you will need a crupper to keep it back.

Other than that super comfy! I found it changed my mare gait to a more free movement.. She also dispised her tree'd saddle to the point where I was chasing her around the stable even while she was tied up!! Wanting a new saddle and knowing donks are hard to saddle I tried the treeless and to my amazment after the first saddle up she started standing still and everything was hunkydory..

One more fun thing...they come in really fun colours :D

I've posted pictures of mine, I didn't pay anything as his owner already had it :D His withers are kind of non-existent but it doesn't seem to slip too much? I'll keep an out of for that.

:)Can I ask where you got your saddle from in the pic with Patches?? Looks very smart and tidy.

I'm not sure, his owner used to ride him in it :) It's a Trekkers Treeless if that helps?
