Hello all

just had yet another saddler out who has said (and it sounds very sane) that what I need for my short-backed, forward girth-grooved, low-withered, round little Welsh Sec C (she's not as bad as it sounds, honestly...) is a treeless saddle

so - can the combined wisdom of HHOF tell me what treeless saddles are good for this type of pony and which to avoid like the plague... seems a big range of prices from the Ansure/Total Saddle Solutions to the Cashel and on down...

open to all advice

many thanks

I use the Barefoot London on both my 16.3 clydesdale and my 15 hand cob. Chancer (cob) is fairly short backed. I went for the size 1 for two reasons - 1 - he is short backed and 2 - it is designed for up to a dress size 14 and it will give me lots of incentatives to keep the fat off so I fit it.

Have used this saddle for a year, Cairo the clyde loves it and they had their backs checked out last month and the physio confirmed that the saddle is not causing any pressure points etc.

Horse & Harmoney do a range of treeless and you can have them on trial.

I am very probably going to go for a Fhoenix next year for showing Chancer in - several friends use them for this on their trads and are very pleased with them.

HI - I've just been in touch with H&H who recommended not using the London (which would have been my preference) if I was planning on longer distance rides (which I am ) as well as dressage...

so have just ordered a Cherokee... but can send back in a week and swap it if I don't like it...

sigh

having gone through a Saddle Co and a Kay Humphries hand-made and not ridden for 10 weeks, anything will do if it gets us up on board.

but SNOW! tomorrow

I haved hacked out on the London for up to 2 hours on occasion and have to say I find it really comfortable, though not as much as the huge western saddle I have for the clydie. That said, most of my riding is normally 30 mins schooling or 1 hour hack.

If you were closer, I would gladly let you try my London - I went for this as I wanted something that I could use for low level showing and dressage as well as a GP.

Now saving for the posh Fhoenix which is a lot more money when I hopefully next year start affiliated showing with my stinky youngster.

Good luck - if you like the Barefoot you could do the same as me and save for the Fhoenix if you want to do more formal riding.

I'd get a Fhoenix now if I could get the office to answer my phone calls... my local rep doesn't have the size I need (and they don't do the vogue that small anyway...

) so he gave me the number of head office, who haven't been in all day

sigh

thank you for your offer - will try out the CHerokee and if Fhoenix get around to replying to my message, I'll try that too.

Once you've riden in the cherokee or the cheyanne you will never look back believe me they are to die for. My boy is a huge suffolk and it is like sitting in an armchair sitting in there!
