Hello all

Can anyone recommend me some cheap trees/hedging or where to get from to go alongside an arena. Not looking for anything grand or complicated and have a very limited budget. It must be self sufficient as I am useless at looking after plants! Basically need something to go on a steep bank running alongside the arena.

Cheers

Lo

Have a look in the "Small holder" mag or maybe their web site, they have ads for trees and hedgeing for sale.
The cheapest way to buy is to get "whips" and they are also the easiest to plant (no deep holes to dig).
Holy makes a good wind break and will just need trimming to keep under control, beech is also good and although not ever green, will hold onto its dead leaves, but will need the top taken off evry year to stop it growing into a big tree.

Not sure on your exact location,but I think you're close enough to look in person,at Buckingham Nurseries. They are not always the cheapest,but their stuff does grow rather than die ( assuming we get some rain or yoy will water if not). Don' t forget tree guards either or the pesky rabbits will chew them all!
They have a website if you want to look but I have found them very helpful when I go in person.

You are after what is called a Whip.
Whips are often 2-3 years old and are often under cut once, to cut the tap root and make the roots fibrous.
so ask for 1u2 or 2u2 (2 year grow, undercut second year and grown on two more years before lifting and selling )

Best for hedging and safe around horses.
Deciduous ( drops leaves in the winter)
Acer Campestre =field mapel
Carpinus =Hornbeam
Crateagus prunifolia
Pyracantha =firethone
Fagus =beech

Evergreens
Holly =Ilex
laurus Nobilus =Bay
Berberis

Suppliers.
Oakovers nurseries in kent largest seedling transplants in the country.
Notcutts at woodbridge suffock

Hope this helps
