I have been offered a colt (at weaning) that is a Trekhaner x tb for £700. The lady is lovely and she was originally going to ask around £1,200 for the little chap so I feel very tempted. My question is, I don't know much about Trekhaners except that they are the "thoroughbreds of Warmbloods"! Has anyone else any experiences of such a cross as I would be very interested in your experiences. Also, mum is only 14.3hh and dad around 16hh so I don't think baby will be over big, your thoughts appreciated. xx

Floss is a Trak x TB, she is by Fleetwater Opposition.

She is very talanted, scopey and athletic. Also generous with her jump.

Like all mares and esp FO offspring you always ask a question rather than tell. She thinks like a pony and jumps like a cat.

I particcularly did not want this cross as I was looking for a pony x TB. However I knew this mare so agreed for daughter to try her and they clicked.
 
we have one, he is very sensitive and a sharp boy. A very petite 15.2. He's a bit of apain though as he is a teenagers horse but there aren't many teenagers who can ride him.
 
Both breds can be sharp, but what is his breeding? One of my colts is by a Trak, but he was known for his very good temperment as was his sire. So have a look at what other offspring from this sire have been like. Difficult where the mares are concerned as they only get to produce 1 foal a yr if that.
 
both breeds are real athletes, traks are known for being intelligent but can be hot-headed. very hard to tell with such a youngster, their temperament obviously isn't set in stone! can you handle the colt a bit and see how he is, maybe ask him a small question he hasn't been asked before and see what his reaction is... and try to tell it apart from natural babyishness/coltiness, not easy, that!
what exactly is his breeding? sire, damsire, for example.
 
The Trakehner breed includes a lot of TB blood anyway and if the TB dam of this yearling had been graded, the foal would have been branded as a pure bred Trakehner. There are different bloodlines within the breed that are sharper and some that are known for their super temperaments and ridability.
I have a KWPN x Trakehner homebred filly and she has the most amazing laid back attitude to life, a pure bred mare who was a little sharp when I got her but has really grown up recently, another pure bred yearling who is a real sweety and actually a bit of a big girls blouse. All different bloodlines and all different temperaments to some extent
 
We have 2 Trekhaner X TB's (brother & sister) they are both quite different in temperment (as well as looks & bone). He was always the bold boy where as she was a lot sharper & more nervous so it is a job to say how your colt would turn out.
 
As said above what is his breeding sire dam etc. My 5yo is Trak x cob (very nice traditional coloured cob mare). My one is sharp but lazy, a pain in the bum but lovely and very very talented. He is a Trak (looks temperment everything)but with patches!! They are very intelligent so need work that makes them think, and as said above you ask not tell them.
I bred him to be the mare but without all the hair but got a jumping machine so now have a rider jumping him bsja. It is hard to tell how they will turn out when so young. I worked on a Trak stud for two years and from my exp some blood lines are sharper than others, some of the youngstock where laid back good to do etc, but others very sharp and difficult to handle.
I would look into the breeding lines and maybe ask if anyone has exp of those horses it might give you a better picture because as a breed they can be so different.
 
Dad is Holme Grove Solomon (think thats how I pronounce it!) and mum I do not know but I do know she is an exceptionally calm and sweet mare. Hope that sheds some light?

I have a trakehner x RP (tb x arab x welsh) and can't be bothered to write an essay lol sorry but I will say that her mum was under 14.2hh (probs 14.2hh I think) and her Dad was 16.2hh but she is only just 15hh, so this little lad may not make very big. Her paces or confo are not amazing but she has a great jump when she puts her mind to it

I am a fan of trakkies due to knowing another who is stunning.
 
Twiglet is a Trak x TB. He can be very sharp, spooky and stressy......but he can also be clever, incredibly brave, a brilliant hack and a pleasure to have around.

In his time he has been a real athlete and turned his hoof to most disciplines.....is hopefully going to start BD with me this year at the age of 18.

I would buy another but wuld take a close look at bloodlines and behaviour as Twig seems quite typical of his 'family' and isn't always the easiest horse.

They can be real thinkers which is sometimes a good thing and sometimes a pain in the a*se!

Holme Grove Solomon is a v well thought of Trak sire, especially for dressage.
