Hi all,

I am thinking of taking my pony to his first show in order for him to gain experiences of as many new things as possible.

As I use him for trekking regularly, I thought this class would be a good place to start. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of these classes- I don't know what I'm supposed to wear or what my pony is meant to wear. Also, would I be expected to ride a show?

Any advice appreciated!

Do you mean a 'le trec' competition? Or maybe something based on their principles?

I know my RC bases Handy Horse/Pony classes on some of the le Trec obstacles.

I don't think it's linked to that. All it says in the guidance is horses should be turned out as if they are going on a 12-18 mile trek. I'm assuming I need hi vis and a saddlebag with bits and pieces but am not sure what else!

I have seen some Treking Classes at the Royal Welsh show, I didn't look for long, but got the impression that they were cobby sorts, carrying saddlebags with halters underneath the bridle and the riders were dressed as if out on the mountains.
I don't know what sort of show they had to do, but if I was taking part I would go prepared to show the horse negotiating opening and closing a gate, going across a wooden bridge, maybe a dismount and remount.

If you mean Trec competitions, then there is a website with details of competitions and training days, but they aren't very widespread, so you are lucky if there is a club and competitions within reasonable distance. Indoor Trec is a good place to start for the obstacles, but would recommend a few training days first, even if only on foot and then you can practice at home, and then practice your map reading skills when hacking.
