Hi, hope someone can help, we are travelling down from Stonehaven and stopping near Perth or Dundee not set in stone yet and wonder if anyone knows of a good trekking or horse riding place to visit?

Not riding but if you fancy something a bit different, Bandirran Clydesdales used to do guided tours and carriage rides. They are West of Perth, on the road to Crieff.

We had a good hack at Crieff hydro but that was quite a few years ago and I don't know what they are like nowadays. Worth a Google anyway.

I've ridden at the Hydro quite a few time before Covid -I went to courses/work meetings & stayed on after. Not been for 3 years as retired now.
I found them a bit patchy. I had lovely rides at quiet times of year. The staff were always lovely & they seem to have a good selection of horses. The horses are schooled/ridden by staff periodically so are not just robots. However when they were busy I got lumped together with other riders of varying ability & there isn't any provision for the group to split so you all end up going at the speed of the slowest. They only do one hour rides.

Just looking through this old thread…I had a bad experience at Creiff Hydro - I was there on a market research mission and to swim in the beautiful pool.

As an experienced rider, I did an assessment ride on a 5yo that bucked when I asked for canter. I wish I had got off straight away as I could feel her back was not right/ she was lame behind.

The instructor told me to keep riding a this poor mare who was obviously unsound, she bucked 3 more times. Finally the instructor admitted the mare was unsound and asked me to ride another gelding for 5/10 mins.

I feel guilty for following instructions and not dismounting as soon as I felt something was not right. I asked when the saddle was fitted…I got no reply.

I was instructed to ride without any contact…the horses have no topline. It’s not surprising that the horses have bad backs if they are hollow.
Instructed to steer with the inside hand not the legs…(not inside leg to outside hand) I literally don’t think the instructor knows how to ride.

Admittedly, it was my first time ever at a riding school so have nothing to compare it to.

The Crieff Hydro Hotel changed hands. Don't know if new owners are also in charge of the riding centre.
Both swimming pools and saunas were really nice. I can highly recommend the Spa experience.

But the big pool was a bit cold for most people because it was -10C outside and the heating could not keep up (the instructor was wearing shorty wetsuit!). It was fine if exercising/ swimming lengths (rather than milling around).

I saw a brilliant swimming instructor giving a lesson to the gym club members.
