I have only had 1 girl interested in my grey gelding but she wants a trial period of 1 week before buying.
I think i will let him go but what precautions should i take?
Should i write a small contract and what should i put in it????

Help please,
thanks in advance (:

no no no no no, don't do it! Tell them they can try him at your yard as much as they like. Your pony will never settle in a week and give them an accurate reflexion and you could easily get a broken pony back. I've seen it go wrong.

There was a thread about this in comp riders yesterday if you have a look.

I would just tell her that your sorry the risk of him being injured is too high (wouldnt say anything about him settling etc would make alarm bells ring!) but she is welcome to come and try him as many times as she wants in the next week before making her decision if she wants to buy him - if she doesnt like it then not your problem!

Don't do it!

I loaned a SHP with view to sale as they had a smaller pony to sell.
I drew up a loan agreement which was signed.
They didn't have the money to buy him at the end of the agreement and returned him (in the dark).
He had an injury to his leg and they are denying responsibility saying it must have happened after he left them.
I am trying to resolve the problem but if not I will take the matter to Court.

Stick to your grounds and still say no (if thats what you want, there are horror stories of trials going wrong but there are decent people in the world and where trials go right so if you think she's on of them, give it a go).
If not how far away does she live from? Simple say your just not happy with a trial period where he leaves you but would more than happy for her to come and do anything she wants with him at your yard?

I've never actually met her so have told her i am not letting him go on trial. also she can get a much better picture of him when he is in familiar surroundings (:

You could always do what we did, the girl who took our cob wanted a months trial with him, but to cover both our backsides (hers as well as ours) we agreed she would pay for him up front but we gave her the guarantee that if she decided he wasn't suitable within the first month then we would give her the money back. That way we couldn't turn round & change our minds & ask for him back & neither could she return an injured or damaged horse. As it turns out it worked really well & she still has him & loves him to bits.

Its far too risky and you can't assess a horse in a week so invite her to try him in his own familiar surrounding or accept you may lose the sale. The risk is far too great.

My advice would be no to allowing him to go to her yard for a trial period.

We have just had a horse sold from our yard, prospective owner came and tried him and loved him wanted full vetting and x rays so paid a 10% deposit so he was shown to no one else. Whilst waiting for the vetting and x-rays to take place (2 weeks as vet on holiday) she has been over 4 times and ridden him in the school, outside, done some groundwork with him etc (she by the way lives an hours drive away!).

He passed his vetting on friday with flying colours and is being collected today.

If she is really keen she will come and spend time with him at your yard where you can control the situation.

Best of luck I know it is difficult.

Definite no from me too. I sent one on a months trial, she got kicked in the field, therefore failed the vetting at their yard and got sent back to me with a lump on her leg. No one fault, just very unlucky.
Would rather take deposit and allow buyer to have trail on my yard.
