I know it isn't a main stream competition report, but it really doesn't get any more competitive than horse-boarding. Last year I was given the honour and the privilege of teaming up with Team Ihorse. I had met Rohan several years previous when I tried out trick riding, and ended up going back last year for a few more lessons. It just so happened that Dan was looking for a rider for the upcoming horseboarding season and I jumped the chance to try something new.
I would say that Rohan showed me the ropes, but he was such a professional that he pretty much took charge, I just had to let him know how long to wait. I never knew a horse give so much and want to win so much. His speed and acceleration was exceptional. Usually that was enough and with most opposition he would storm home well clear without me moving a muscle, but when we finally met an opponent with greater speed, and age on its side, he dug so deep and tried so so hard to keep his nose in front. His heart and will to win took him over the line in front of horses that should have had the better of him.
He wasn't a cuddly horse, not particularly friendly, he just wanted to get on with the job. I had so much respect and affection for him. We went on to be National Horseboarding Champions 2011, alongside his career as a trick riding horse and jousting horse. i hope his owner wont mind me posting a little photo tribute to a horse who is a legend amongst his sport.
Rohan; who died this saturday. As tough and genuine as they come. I hope your life is free from pain at last.xx
