Having just read the BSJALove post re. her youngster, does anyone on here have any anecdotes or words of wisdom regarding this breed?

i think hanovarians can be nutters sometimes too! my mare is a nutter!!1 lol but that could be a mare thing...i keep looking under her black coats of signs of chestnut there.

I have a trakehner - he is the most beautiful, sane, intelligent, friendly horse I have ever known. There is nothing 'tricky' about him (except the odd buck!).
I certainly didn't go out looking to buy a trakehner - I wanted a reliable hunter type/cob for happy hacking, but a friend of a friend put me in touch with a dealer who had Jerry for sale. I initially said no - a 17.1hh grey horse was NOT what I was looking for! But having tried him and then having him on trial for a couple of weeks, I realised he was just great and I would be able to do all the hacking I wanted (he is SO traffic proof - I could ride him up the M1) plus I could do some Riding club stuff like dressage and jumping.
I have had him for nearly 2 years now and he has barely put a foot wrong in that time.

i work with them, there a lovely breed but to be honist, i prefere something with a bit more wieght, like a warmblood X. they have LOVELY movement with correct breeding. but i admitt they are very highly strung at times. the ones i work with are very Loud.

they are surprisingly hardy though!! most of ours are barefoot and are good doers.

my youngster is a typical Trake.. i just wish that he was a bit more 'easy'

Hi BSJA - I have just read your post re: your youngster.
I was quite interested in your youngster's problem because every now and then, Jerry does just as you described - he won't go forward into the bridle but tenses up.
I thought it was caused by pain but he has only done it about three or four times since I have had him - one of those times at a drssage competition!!
The rest of the time, he moves beautifully - his trot floats along and his canter has a good rhythm (according to our dressage sheets!).
I hope you get to the bottom of your horse's problem but I know they are not known as 'tricky trakehners' for nothing!

thanks very much

its nice to know im not the only one with this problem although i hope your doesnt esculate to the extent of mine!!! its an awful feeling when your sqeezing with all your might and the horse just gets tence and short. its impossible to work with and it makes me think wonder why i bother sometimes.

From what I have been told 'squeezing with all your might' AIN'T what the this breed are gonna respond well to.

aww shes lovely!!

and when you have a horse that isnt riding in to the bridle, any horse you gotta push from the leg, not hold and thats the way he was trained, and that where the problem is! blooming horses!!
