I recently trimmed my new traditional cobs feathers following mud fever over the winter and then a major mite issue....he has long term dermatitis from poor feather care previously to my owning him....and on vets advice he was trimmed to deal with it once a for all.

Now with no feathers, he looked very top heavy, with lots of mane (though not natural and long) sort of long and shaggy and half grown out from a previous pulling session in his last home.

What was left was an 8 inch long 2 inchs thick shaggy mess.

So I pulled it.

Big mistake! Huge!

I hate it.

My soft baby face boy has turned into a teenage hoodie. (If horses can be called hoodies).

I look at him and see another horse. Short forelock and mane, he just looks wrong. Other people on the yard love it.....but not me....though I try to put on a brave face.

I have a showing show planned soon and he will be going trimmed and plaited, just wondering who else shows their coloureds trimmed and plaited...NEED reassurance that my boy will look ok! Pics of yours would be fab.

Thanks!

My boy is not trimmed and not plaited but in so much pain tonight, stupid infection, vet actually thought fracture he was that bad today. Was going to ask how to trim their legs successfully, but wont, as you said it's horrible. My boy needs his looks, feather or not, he prob would look silly. vet wanted to shave his leg yesterday, but i said no, as she really didnt know why she was, just checking kind of thing. It was my first time dealing with her as a vet, super, and she's invited me to come driving with her tomorrow, so excited, never did that before!!!!

I clipped my boy's legs a week or so ago. I just dont like them hairy so his legs will be clipped all year round. He also had some skin irritation under the hair so easier to keep an eye on that. Havent got great pics but these are a couple from our show last weekend. His plaits are awful, he kept trying to rub em out.

thanks for the replies. They are gorgeous! My boy is heavier than Jo jo and about the same as the hogged cob.

I will have to keep the feathers in a state of regrowth all the time. I have done full feathers before (on him and another even hairier) and It is not for me. Despite folowing ALL the guideline form those more experienced on here...including pig oil and sulpher, frontline and even the injection (cant thin what it is now) I still had trouble.

I find if I trim them with a guide (3 to 6mm) going with the hair that I get legs that look like non feathered legs...but not bald! I have noticed that full feathers grow back within 3 months! omg! I was shocked at how quick.

My prob is working out the mane.....when we have less or no feather. Love to see a heavy cob plaited...if anyone has one.

Here's my chap, plaited and trimmed. Although not sure you can tell his legs are clipped with his boots on! I persoanlly think he looks very smart, and is much much easier to keep clean :) His tail is pulled, as is his mane which is kept quite short but his forelock has been left long which I think looks best on him.
I'm sure it'll be okay, it'll always grow back! My mum did it to my old pony once, chopped all his feathers off, but thankfully they grew back quickly and looked fab again  thank goodness, he certainly didn't suit it xx
p.s. hope the picture works!

I love your coblets. gorgeous.

Here is Marley with feathers trimmed and mane intacked, though on the other side. Sorry the pic is sooo big. He is 5. Not exactly sure of his breeding, though must some Gypsy in there!
