The trimmer is newly qualified, recommended by a trimmer who was recommended by a hhoer, so a bit tenuous, but can't seem to find any more local ones.

I've asked who's she's trained with as I understand there's different bodies, but what else do I need to know? What dodgy things could they possibly do to the feet that I should look out for / say no to? I've never questioned the farrier with trimming really! He's not been touched since last august but hasn't got overgrown feet I don't think, they've self trimmed pretty effectively.

I had a trimmer/barefoot lady to mine and she didn't actually trim - gave me some advice on the deep sulcus he still has, took a bit of case history as such and basically said make these adjustments and see what results happen - so I guess be prepared that no trimming might take place. It was a really really interesting visit and I learnt tons int he hour or so she was there

no trimming of frogs or soles ;) and don't be surprised if they only use a rasp if he has been trimming them himself. Am sure all will be fine :)

Thanks :)

I'm pretty sure there's nothing to trim tbh as they're pretty worn by me. The frogs might need looking at though as he seems uncomfortable downhill ATM which I'm thinking is sore front heels perhaps. He was lame today in his boots, but had a big stone in his foot when I brought him in so hoping tmrw he's sounder and that's that. Who know with my horse though :)

I expect her to ask about diet if it's your first appointment.

Talk you through what she's doing and lots of watching him move.

My 2 had a check up yesterday, we walked over all sorts of surfaces to see how they were moving. Retired one had a tidy, he's not in work so doesn't self trim. The other one is only a few months out of shoes so still growing a new foot, he needed a little trim so she rasped, we walked again, a tiny rasp and then took him out onto the gravelly track to see how he was after which was fine.

Thanks, if she asks to see him move down our gravelly track it'll be obvious how sore he is ATM. I think I need to try and print some before pics of his feet so that she can she the changes/progress. I think the front frogs and heels are changing ATM which is why he's sore. Else the grass has shot through or the new feed dengie molasses free is not suitable.

When I had a BF Trimmer start to do my mare (always had my farrier to do her) I looked at what I fed her wrote it all down . My trimmer came discussed the mare , looked at the feed I was feeding , watched her move trimmed a bit watched her move again and then trimmed a bit more, then watched her move again. We discussed boots and pads etc. We also spoke about what I wanted to do with her( she is 20 this year and has had Navicular for the last 2 years) All I want to do is gentle hack her out to stop her getting bored in the field.
