I have bought a horse who has rather too much hair on her legs, she has a TB body and hairy very coarse cob legs. I don't want to clip her out but equally I don't want to have a hairy legged horse. My dilemma is that I want to have smart legs I am going to have to clip her legs with my leg blades as trimmers would not be man enough for regular trimming which I want to do to keep her smart.

Does anyone have any ideas please as scissor and comb trimming is just too "Doorsteppy"

I clip the backs of anything with course leg hair, usually from below the knee down the tendon area and into the heels leaving the front untouched, it makes enough difference without doing the front, I use my normal clippers with a mix of cutting down at the sides, so it blends in a bit, and cutting up onto the hair, with practice it looks very smart and even if it goes a bit wrong it soon grows back.

I wouldn't take the whole leg off unless I was clipping elsewhere although would be tempted to combine it with a low trace if the hair was that bad.

Ditto BP. I've got a rather common one (Sorry Alf) He's the shabby remains of a very good dressage horse, so I keep him well trimmed up, to make him look like a sports horse, rather than a vanner!

I clip hs legs out completely as soon as the ground starts to dry out in spring, then regularly run the clippers down the back of his legs and into his heels, then blend in with the clippers upside down - blades at 45 degrees. I also use scissors and comb sometimes - it's not doorsteppy if you do it correctly. Clipping legs wasn't the done thing at all when I was training - we all got very good with a comb and scissors!

Auslander, she is so ideal in every way (so far) she is worth putting up with the hairy legs, have a piccy of her as. 5 year old from her last but one owner and with no hair she is a Sports Horse type it is just her legs which give it all away!!!!!
