Hi all,

My Welshie has an insanely thick tail, which almost down to the ground now. I need to give it a trim, we're off to a local show in a few weeks. I just can't get my head around how to cut it to look natural. Can anyone give me an idiots guide, or maybe point me to a YouTube vid?

As you can see from my sig, I usually give cheat and bang it straight across, but thought I'd better make an effort this time!

Thanks :D

I use sharp scissors but with rounded ends (from IKEA). I don't cut, as in snipping, with the scissors but more like a razor cut it where you open the scissors and draw them down the sides of the tail to layer it.

I lift up the tail and put my arm underneath the dock so as its raised, then I cut a straight-ish line from chestnut to chestnut :) that usually looks ok, then i just snip the bits that look too long :P

Use a sharp knife - Fold over the bottom of the tail to the length you want and hack the knife through it. No good for taking an inch off but does a lovely job of taking the winter length back to respectable :)

If you only need to remove the banged look, use a scissors to cut into the bottom of the tail...

I was assuming you wanted the plume look on your Welsh. That is what I have described. Like this:

I twist the end of the tail to form a point and then work down the sides with a razor comb releasing the tail and checking the length at intervals as it's easy to accidentially go a bit short otherwise. Once you've got the length and basic shape you can just tidy up by using the razor to trim off stray bits. I like my mares tail to be about 4 inches below her hocks when carried otherwise it looks a bit too short.
