Took Hugo to the vets today.
As I said on my previous post, he is fine in himself, eating, drinking, wee-ing and poo-ing just fine, but he keeps making himself sick.
We have had to move a blanket of the sofa as he started to eat it. The newspaper in his cage has had to be removed, as he started to eat it. Any leaves, twigs, gravel, cigarette butts, etc he finds outside he will eat. Can't even take him for a walk as he sits down and starts eating leaves as soon as he gets outside. All this obviously makes him sick. After another failed walk this afternoon I whipped him up to the vets.
Temperature fine, colour fine, fine in himself, but, understandably a bit dehydrated, and he has lost a bit of weight. Evidently what food he is eating hasn't the time to be absorbed before he makes himself sick.
Vet was at a bit of a loss, but gave him an AB injection, which I personally don't think he needed as he isn't ill as such, and she gave him an injection to stop him being sick, which again, I don't think he needed as he is only sick when he stuffs himself full of rubbish. I wanted to find out why he was eating rubbish to make himself sick as there must be a reason for it surely?
Hugo is teething (5 months old), and does have inflamed gums, could this be something to do with his making himself sick. I can't see it myself as he isn't chewing things as such, but eating things that generally don't need much chewing.
I have put him on meaty food for now, instead of his hard food so his gums don't get even more sore, and he is on the lead even in the yard so we can stop him eating leaves.
I really am at a loss, any ideas?
ETA: Just had a lightbulb moment. Could he be struggling to eat his hard food if his gums are sore, so eats stuff that isn't particularly hard because he is hungry? We usually free-feed, keep hard food down all the time and Hugo and Lodger Dog just help themselves when they are hungry. Perhaps Hugo isn't actually eating as much of the hard food as I think he is........ the meaty diet for a few days might stop him eating rubbish. A possiblity?
