Tripping a little?

I am a very paranoid loaner of a 20 yr old NF who Pony Clubs, Hacks, Schools, Showjumps, Competes etc etc. Over the last few days/week I've noticed that occasionally (no more than once a day) his back legs trip a little bit, almost always on rough ground and or on a slope going downhill? Am I being paranoid or is this something to keep an eye on? Thanks!

I've known a few older horses do this, one I rode had a touch of arthritis and a dodgy back but he was an extreme! Has he had his back checked? Could be a problem there. Or may just be general stiffness - does he get better as he warms up?

Has he had farrier recently as my mare would do this when her toes were to long
