tripping over?

my pony has tripped 4 times in the 8 months ive had her - luckily she hasntdone any damage to herself (although ive nearly come over her head!) She did it again this morning - its always in walk and when we are just ambling along - i dont ride at the end of the buckle (rein wise) and have a slight contact - but my legs have not been on any of the times its happened and we are always in 'relax' mode - ive seen a post in the past saying to someone else that this happened to that it was their fault for not actually 'riding' the horse - but is that right? sometimes during the hack its nice to just plod - or should i stop that in view of what has happened? Any advise please guys - thanks x
 
having a plod is fine but if she is lazy then you will have to get her moving so she will pick her feet up and not fall over! walk her on a bit so she is marching rather than slopping along xxxx

if it keeps on maybe get her legs and back looked over?
 
thank for reply jenbleep - back is always being done, in fact waiting for back lady today - she is quite forward going but can go into plod mode - will just have to remember to keep her marching - its hard to always remember though, isnt it, on a nice warm morning chatting to you mates as you walk along x
 
absolutely! a horse i used to ride (was a riding school horse used to drag her hind feet when she went down hill - she used to have square hooves! xx
 
I learnt this from experience. Its great to hack out on a loose contact from time to time and enjoy, but I always keep my leg on just incase so that she marches out. Its worse for people who's horses tend to go on the forehand too - you have to keep after them for safety's sake.
 
Absolutely agree with Llwyncwm. Of course it's nice for your horse to have a stretch down when hacking out - but just don't let them flop along, because this is when they are most likely to do something stupid and trip up.

However, it's not always the case obviously, and accidents can still happen when a horse is being ridden 'properly' as we know from poor old Henryhorn. However, we can only do our best and by ensuring that we have some kind of contact and are riding the horse forward, we are less likely to have an accident.
 
Agreed with the above, happened to me on Tues morning actually - Had just been for long canter, walking back to gate on loose rein, Bruce tripped over the bottom of the gate (which we must have walked thru 200 times)

Admittedly he is a dope but taught me to concentrate and not let him amble!

i had narsty shock ovr the same thing, mine actually went down and laid on he floow for a couple of mins. I know only let him 'plod' on the road, quiet one ! has not done it since - it scared us both
 
If the horse is tripping all the time then I'd suggest natural balance shoes - Ty has had these since I had him - he would trip all the time! We had 6 weeks recently without them (shod with normal shoes as I forgot to tell new farrier he had them) and he was back to tripping over his feet again!
