Have had Jessie for a few weeks now and when we go out hacking and i ask her for a trot she goes sideways rather than straight!
She only does this when hacking not in the school, any advice please.

she may be in pain being on hard ground - what sort of surface does it happen on ? Did you have her vetted at all ? Has she changed diet since you have had her ? Can you give us lots more info :)

She has a clean bill of health and it always happens on the road!
The lady where she came from had only used her as a happy hack and she had her from the age of 5 so hasn't been thrashed about.
she gave her a gentle life as she rescued her from a field and nursed her back to health and wanted her to have an easy life after her tough beginning

My first port of call would be the vet tbh. It's impossible to give advice from what you've said so far I'm afraid. It could be a change in diet has triggered mild lami, could be an old injury, could be a hoof problem - you need a vet diagnosis, as we can only speculate. So sorry.

Thanks anyway for taking time to post!
she has had a injury on one of her back legs as she brushes badly so has to be turned out in brushing boots and overreach boots,
hopefully she is ok,the vet is coming to do Jabs soon so will bend his ear!lol

All the girls at the yard say she is sound and just needs get fitter(they have alot of knowledge between them)but just wondered what you guys on here may of thought.
she was only ridden a couple of days a week so will see what she is like after a bit more exercise :)

My 5 year old was like this when we first started hacking him. It was lack of strength, he always used to bend like a banana! The more hacking we have done, the better he has become. If you are still worried have a chat with the vet, seeing as she is sound I would imagine it's a schooling thing that will get better with time.

I do hope so,she does tend to drag herself up hill rather than push from behind so hope it is just a fitness thing, will keep you posted on our progress! :)

If you are doing this on a road you might be sub-consciously pulling the reins more to make sure you stay in the same line, in a school you follow the fence on the road you follow the white line which isn't straight! If she is good enough to let your reins go looser (and no cars coming obv!) do so and see if she still goes sideways.

Use your legs to correct her. It sounds like a fitness thing to me. If you are riding her regularly she should improve quickly. If she doesnt I'd seek professional advice.

Took Jessie for a ride like i said and she didn't put a foot wrong!
She did find going up the hill a bit of a stuggle but coped very well,no spooks or sideways movement!
was great today when i lunged her and did everything she was asked.
She is due her vet check soon and also gonna get her saddle checked but seems to be a very happy girl!:)
she does lack a bit in muscle so i am hoping it is just a fitness thing!
