Hey everyone.

My pony is 4yrs old. I broke him in the march/april time. In the last month or so, he has started to not want to be lunged on one rein, or act calmly in trot. The lunging isnt a big issues, as i get my other half to walk around with him, and hes gradually re-learning to do it properly. The trotting however is an issue. Im trying to sell him, im 5'6'' and hes 14hh, so im selling him to a smaller person. The problem is, he doesnt want to listen to them when they ask for a trot. Is it best to just do loads of trot work, or can anyone suggest something else? This pony is an angel in every respect other than this, and throughout my time of owning him, has not done anything nasty, bucked, reared etc.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Thanks

As pony was previously fine with this and it is worse on one rein I'd suggest it could well be a physical issue. Instead of trying to force the pony to comply I'd get a vet out for a quick once-over before pony learns to associate work with pain and possibly develops behavioural issues. Could save you hassle in the long run.

Could he be in pain somewhere? Especially if he is worse on one rein on the lunge & reluctant to go forward in trot - if he is an angel in every other way, perhaps it's because it hurts somewhere, rather than him avoiding work? I would ask my vet to check him over, I think.

Best of luck with him :)

I would have the usual checks done, vet check, teeth, back. Also have you had your saddle fitter recently ponies can change shape so quickly at that age and in the first stages of work.

If all is fine I would go back to basics and when riding off the lunge I would still have someone there with there with the lunge line which will back up your leg so he learns to move forward off your leg again.

Ok, maybe i explained it wrongly. Its not moving off of the leg, its staying in trot, he has developed an urge to canter, not nastily, just doesnt want to trot with anyone small. His back was checked friday, along with teeth etc., saddle is fine, he has a wintec with cair and excahngable gullet, saddlefitter did it all for me recently. Ive thought about going back to basics, but he is doing so well in every other respect. He had his first xc comp yesterday, was 2'3'' and he went clear, and came 3rd. I was thinking about giving him some time off, but he needs his brain working on, he doesnt like not having something to do.

I thought initially it was overdoing it for his baby brain, but he seems to thrive on doing everything

Thanks for the responses so far tho
