Trotting pole distances

If I wanted to put poles down just to walk over what distance should I do them for a 16.3hh shire x??

I do one big step (approx 4 1/2 pidgeon steps with my size 9 foot!) for my 17hh boy but he has quite a big trot

my 16.2 wb is 4 toe-to-toe steps for one stride (size 7)
