Can anyone give me layout that I could use with my horse which would not involve me having to dismount every few minutes to re-arrange the poles. We have done 3 and 5 in a row spaced at 9 feet for walk and trotting over. I am trying to get her to engage her hind legs more. Many thanks.

Can you not try like two sets of poles 5/6 each side and have some on a shorter stride and some on a longer stride? So your doing a really slow powerful trot over the short side then a stretch over the slightly wide ones? you could also have normal trot poles one side and raised trot poles on the other other? Also try a fan of poles in one corner either side of the school. I also like putting zig zag shape down the center line so you can keep doing a figure of 8 or serpentine and go over the poles. Hope these help :) x

4 poles placed in a + shape but with a gap in the middle. They can be used in loads of ways when placed like that, small circles coming off each 'arm', figures of 8's, large circles etc. We bought the book 101 schooling exercises & its been a great help, theres tons of different pole ideas in there. The + is what I place down for my daughter to play around when I'm busy doing other jobs as she doesnt have to get off to move them about xx

3 or 4 poles spaced for the horse's normal trot stride on the long side or in a corner and another 3 or 4 poles spaced for a longer trot stride on the diagonal so that they are out of the way but still easy to use. Or you can put the raised poles on the diagonal, or poles at that aren't quite parallel to each other to make the horse think a bit more.
