Trotting poles

I have just bought some trotting poles and was surprised to see that the ends were ĺeft unpainted. I queried this and was told it was to let the wood breathe. Is this right or should I paint them?

Just asked my OH, he said if 'you don't paint them they will breathe in water!' He's never heard of this rationale..

That's what I thought. Just replacing my pokes which after 10 years are starting to rot. They had the ends painted so think I will do that on the new ones.
