I am trying to get hold of a specific bit, but cannot find it in the size I want. The bit in question is a Shires Sweet Iron Loose Ring Eggbutt but all the suppliers I look at only go up to 5.5 inch. And this seems to be quite normal across a number of other bits I have looked at. Why is there a limit on the sizes? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi My cob takes a 6" in bit and i found the best place to gets bits for him was www.shop4bits.com Good luck

If you look on the Shires site, they dont manufacture it in 6", the largest is 5.5", so thats why you cant get hold of one!

This is Abbey who make the best quality bits in the UK. They can make virtually any bit to any size you require.

ingatestone saddlery will send bits out by post and several of the bits they stock go up to 7".

I recently got a french link 6" and a gag in 6.5".

They also stock all sorts of wierd and wonderful bits.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I know you can get large bits. I have a whole collection of 6" ones which I use currently or in the past. And I have visited all of the sites mentioned bu cannot find the bit I want in the size I want. And yes, I know Shires only seem to make it in sizes up to 5.5", but I have contacted them to see if they might be able to make one in a larger size. The reason I want this bit is that I was loaned one almost identical to this, made by Coronet (same as Korsteel, I believe) and that was a 6" version and it was very good for my horse. I want a loose ring but he has large lips and these seem to pinch him, and an eggbutt does not give the feel I am looking for. So this is a great compromise. But I cannot find that one either! Has anyone else had a similar situation and how did you solve it?
My question as to why some bits are made only in smaller size ranges than other ones was just a general wondering if there is a good reason for it. Is it a technical one or simply a matter of supply and demand?

If you ring Fylde saddlery he might make you one. T: 01995 670332 that's if they are still there. Not used them for about 3 years. Good luck
