Troxel hats

Anyone use them? Good/bad opinions?

Should add the disclaimer as asking in terms of them being used for max 30mins at a time walk and trot, non strenuous type riding.

I had one - for a while. Quite cool and well ventilated but I found the gadget at the back of the head for fit adjustment very uncomfortable. When I had a fall the adjuster snapped open which
made it a pain to ride home .

I had one, felt like a cheap bike helmet. If you're pretty sure you're not going to fall off it'd probably be ok but I stopped using mine because I thought it wouldn't actually do much good if I needed it to !

I had one when I was about 5/6. Like Polos Mum said they're a bit like a bike helmet and not all that comfortable, less chance of helmet hair though.

I've got the sierra one, love it, never get a hot head, find the adjustment thing fine and useful as all previous hat's I've had, once they bedded in became to big. When it dies (I've had it 4 years) I will get another one without a second thought - not sure about the cheaper ones though, they do look like push bike helmets

I have about 4 of them in all different colours and find them good. Some people do not get on with them so you best to try and not buy online. As for safety I know someone who had a pretty nasty fall and her hat took a real battering, it saved her life.

I have one that I only wear in hot weather. Marvellous! This is my second one as I had a fall in the first one and bashed my head on the floor. The hat was scuffed but I was unhurt, I ditched it then though and bought my current one.

My husband had a JTE adjustable hat. A friend borrowed it and came off, landing on her head, in the sand school. Hat took the brunt and was wrecked....

Friend walked away with just bruising. I was always a bit sceptical about the plastic hats with the adjustable knob at the back but now I have more respect for them. They do their job and saved my mate's life.....

I used to use them, found them very comfortable. I had a few falls (young horse and lots of high jinks), I think I went through three of them and they were perfect. One fall in particular was a bad one onto tarmac, and I did hit my head. The hat didn't split (and neither did my head). They are also lovely and cool, and even though vented, they didn't let in the Scottish rain either. They were designed by a neurosurgeon, so I'd be quite confident that the safety standards were good

I don't use one now - no reason other than when I came to replace the last one, I couldn't immediately find the one in the colour I wanted and bought a Harry Hall Legend, which has lasted me the last 3 years (horse is grown up now ).

ETA - you need to have a Troxel shaped head! Some of my friends tried them and got awful headaches. Equally, the hats that suit them (Charles &Owen) I find don't suit my head.

Brightbay I think you & I must have the same shaped head. Charles Owens pinch my head, but Troxels are lovely and comfy.

Interesting that they fit more like Champions (opposite to Charles Owen) - good to know. It's not for me, more my RDA group. We're looking at getting new hats and they were recommended at a training day.

I have a Troxel Sierra and really rate it, I have a champion shaped head too!

My usual hats feel really hot and clumsy compared to this one. I love it because it looks a bit different too- a cross between a polo helmet and a safari hat! I have the tan coloured one.

They have passed safety standards. Very good value but shape doesn't fit all like any hat. Will protect you in fall, very popular with endurance riders who wear them for hours. Good reputation.

When I bought my new one last year I had to buy it in the states, and get my mum to bring it home when she visited my brother. Airowear used to distribute them, but no longer do, think they are now owned by Charles Owen. I have chased Troxel on who their new distributor is, but they don't seem to have one yet.
