Seen these online and the washable liner appeals but just wondered if anyone had experience of them. I see the one I'm most interested in isn't Kitemarked but does meet basic UK standards.

Have been using my daughters one over the summer, very light but can't say I felt that well protected in it, now the hat has come apart, the crown from the rim, so it's been duct taped back together. Best stick to a proper scully I think!

I got one of these for the summer because my head gets so hot I get headaches when I ride if its hot!!!!!!
Definately helped but I didnt feel like it was up to the same safety as my normal hat so swapped back in the end.

I've got one which I bought a couple of years ago for summer hacking, but I never felt very well protected in it either so ended up sticking to my usual 'proper' hat.

Hmmm... so all in all everyone feels that it's not 'safe' enough? Is that just because it's light or genuinely not safe? I think it meets the same spec as my current hat (a Charles Owen Kid's Own).

I heard the reason they aren't kitemarked it because the vents mean that if you fell onto something pointy (rock, fence post) it would just go straight through. That put me right off- I'd rather have a sweaty head!

Does everyone mean the Sierra helmet, or other style?
I've got a Troxel Sierra, really like it, feel safe in it, stops me going beetroot red in the face during summer.
Its BSEN 1384:1997 approved and ASTM F1163/SEI certified so thought that was sufficient protections? :)

Mines not the newest so maybe they have changed but I felt it more like wearing a cycle helmet, doesn't feel that stable and the harness straps are quite long, plus the fixed peak could be an issue if you fall off.

The safety standards are fine for leisure riding, and the original Troxel designer was a neurosurgeon IIRC, so that's reassuring.

However it has been my experience that you either have a Troxel shaped head or you don't, and if you don't, they are very uncomfortable. I suspect they suit slightly more oval than round heads :D

People I know who don't suit them end up complaining of sore ears :D and headaches. I like them a lot, but then I clearly have an egg shaped head ;)

The best idea is to try one on. You'll know straight away whether you like it or not.

I have a round head and mine is a Troxel Sierra, I love it. I've had it around 3/4 years now... Maybe I should wear another one! I also have a champion pro jockey skull and a just togs junior show jumper, and I always pick that one up for hacking in. Not sure I would cc in it though, I wore my skull for that.

Loved my troxel till Malaga bucked me off onto it! Hat was fine but I had to get another and ended up with another make...really wish I'd stuck to my Troxel!

How true. Mine arrived this mornng and is already on its way back to Robinson's. Eugh, horrid hat! Very uncomfortable and dung in at the back of my head something terrible. Guess that means I have an oval shaped head then!

Drat. Back to the drawing board for me then.

I love mine, but as airowear are no longer distributing them, and I wanted a specific one, I had to import my most recent one from the states!! I have tried to contact troxel about when they are finding another distributor, but they haven't been very helpful!
They are up to US standards, but they def don't fit everyone, the OH can't get on with them at all!!
