Troy's first day out... and a little advice too

Hannah is obviously taking her role as a mum very seriously which is a good thing in the long run!

I suppose as everything is so new for all of you it will take time for everyone to get used to the routine.

Other than that, cant offer any advice, sounds like Hannah's just being a good protective mum
 
He's gorgeous - and going to be huge!!! - definitely start leading him immediately - in the stable and practice him being lead in front of Mum - My first foal (now 12yo but still referred to as THE foal!) took off with me and dragged me on my face across yard (was picking gravel out of legs for days

) cos I didn't practice leading with them and he turned a bit thuggy. Learned v quickly from that mistake and now ALWAYS lead from the word go! Good luck!!

No idea, I've always seen foals just left (leading round a quiet, but still busy enough road and all! person leading, me shooing from behind) but I do not know if this is safe at all so no advice really, just wanted to say how lovely he is!

He's gorgeous and hope he turns out to be all you hoped for. In the meantime, plenty of piccies and we need to know his every move for the next few weeks. If you stop now, it will be like getting to the end of a very good book. OK - happy ending, but then everything goes a bit flat. Have really enjoyed the cliffhanging and didn't really want him to come too soon.

I even forgive him the two Chocolate Hob Nobs I lost on a bet he'd be here the weekend before last

He looks lovely Becki! Sorry to hear about your poor foot, sounds nasty.

What I do with mine for the first few days is left hand holding a rope or towel around the foal's neck, right hand holding the mare's leadrope AND hand around the foal's bum/tail. That way the foal is right under the mare's nose at all times and you also have some control over the foal. This will only work though if you have someone to open gates etc for you.

I prefer this method to having two people leading them as if one gets too far ahead the other panics, this way you have one person with control of the mare and her foal.


After a week or so of doing this I then move on to leading the foal from the foal slip (just slide the rope through, never clip it on) on my right, and leading mum on the left so that they are side by side.

Re the leading, I'm sure you're sorted now with the good advice here and Pat's PM but just to say I would echo the others that say yes, keep Troy right under Hannah's nose for the first few days until she becomes more relaxed, which she will.
The other horses will also stop making such a fuss as they get used to seeing Troy about.

Hannah looks very well, you must be so proud of them both.

PS Hope Grace's nose isn't out of joint!

He is soo lovely, makes me want one now LOL Senza gives me enough grief though ha ha

Sorry no advice on leading as i have never had a foal but i'm sure they will settle into a routine once they have done it a few times and Troy will probably end up leading the way LOL

i would lead him right under her nose if you can so she can see and touch him at all times and possibly have a bridle on her too.dont try to restrain her too much as she will probably feel more panicky
shantih was very concerned where bey was when she was first born and i found leading bey in front was best from the off.shantih used to march behind with her nose actually on her rump at first lol (or maybe she was pushing her along so she could get into the grass faster...?!)
she will chill out a little as the days pass, but it still doesnt help either of you until she does!LOL
congrats on a healthy baby anyway
