I am VERY happy that I have everything sorted out from a technological point of view and my foaling cams are now connected to Mare Stare ... :)

The link is:

Scroll down to the True Colours Farm icon and click on it which will take you to the webcam in Pearlescent's stall

Looking at the camera angle, I know I have to change it tomorrow so that the entire stall is more visible, but this is going to have to do for tonight!

Please do let me know if you notice anything that I should be aware of. The numbers are posted on the Mare Stare website and believe me - I wont mind a phone call at all, if I happen to be sleeping through something I should be aware of! :)

Pearl is officially due on April 18th - today is Day 316 - but she looks like she may well go early so thats why I am starting foal watch this early with her. I would think in the next 7-10 days she will probably foal but we all know how sneaky mares can be!

Once Pearl foals, we'll switch to the camera in Puchi Trap's stall and foal watch will begin on her at that time (she is due on May 19th). Next year we'll have the 4 camera's hooked up and we'll be able to access them simultaneously instead of having to switch from one to the other

My bulletin board will also be up and operational on the Mare Stare website in the next day or so, and I'd love to have you drop in and post your comments as well!

So many thanks if any of you are able to peek in every once in awhile, especially during the times when it is nightfall over here and someone may be in a different time zone ... or you are simply a night owl and like staying up all through the night for some reason! :)

Oh good!

Think of me when you just crack an eye open to check on your camera, I have a mare indoors now and NO camera, I actually have to walk across the garden to check her :(

Oh no! Really?! You poor thing ... I think the only thing worse would be having to camp out in the barn all night long for nights on end ...

We've had the camera's in use for years, but this is the first time we've hooked up through a system like Mare Stare where it is on the internet and we can have eyes watching from all over ...

On one board I posted on, a girl in Alberta (2 hours time difference from us) said that she worked nights, so had nothing better to do than stare at my mare all night long, so she was posting updates at 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 am and its SO nice to know you have multiple eyes out there just in case you nod off and need someone else to prod you awake if something is happening!

We've been camping in the barn for a month and a half now, and I don't know what it's like in Canada atm, but I woke up to find my mug of water had frozen (was apparently -10 - -15 :( )

Oh yuck. How awful ... We've been blessed with some really mild weather this entire winter and now into spring as well, but I still wouldnt want to be camping out especially for that length of time ...

Are the wireless camera's not an option for you over there? Here they are running about CAD $175.00 or about GBP 80.00 but the house and barn have to be within that 300 foot range in order to have them work. The pure wireless set up we had before was iffy at times - especially if the weather was bad - but this new set up is perfect. I couldnt be happier with it ... :)

And here is the link to my Bulletin Board on Mare Stare as well ...

:) Fortunately the barn is only 50' away, actually, if I open the bedroom window I can hear any noise, well I would, except the wretched frogs have come out of hibernation and are now singing ALL night long! I'm on puppy watch right now too.

No, I don't do camping without home comforts!:) I have a very comfy chair, heating and a coffee machine in the workshop if I needed to stay out there. My arabian is very obliging and always foals down in the daytime, last time this Paint waited until about 2am and then got in trouble and I had to get poor Dr Cook out of bed, fortunately he's only 10 minutes away.

A friend used to just set up a baby listening device from the barn to house.

Although the yard has cameras etc, we're not in the position to set up a wireless link! It's not TOO bad, we have amenities, sofas and I have my swag (any aussies will appreciate that :D ).

I wish we DID have wireless, I've had to drive 53 miles everytime I wish to freeze my backside off waiting for this foal, so checking her online would be ace. Only I know very well my mother wouldn't be off the computer!

I love that site - MareStare, but daren't watch it anymore. I was watching a particular stud, for no other reason than they had lots and lots of mares due close together, so I thought I was sure to see babies being born. I have only managed to watch two being born and both were lost - so I'm not watching anymore.

I am just loving this so far ...

I have people in the UK that are checking 8:00 - 11:00 am their time so 3:00 - 6:00 am our time, I have a lady on the west coast of Canada that is working a night shift, so she said she has nothing better to do for her 8 hour shift, so she watches her all night long, I have friends in Australia that check in on her during their daytime

I mean - really - it just cant get any better than this at all! :D

I'd hate to have to drive 2 miles to do foal check let alone 53 miles!!!

I have to drive 3 to do foal check!! we've been checking at night now for about 2 weeks. We'll be camping in the back of our estate from tomorrow night.. eek!
x

 In the back of a car! I hope your weather is warm and dry for you. It's just gone midnight here, I've been out to check just now and it's -8C, more for hay and water than imminent foaling though. Robin has a time to go yet.

Hopefully you won't have to camp out for too long, there is a lot to be said for indoor stables at times like this.

Donna, I've just visited Pearl, she's head down, leg cocked quite peacefully :)

This Mare Stare thing has got me obsessed with watching!!! Though True Colours seemed to have an empty stable when I looked last night. Been watching a grey arab mare somewhere in the world not sure where but its about 4.22am there. No sign of baby yet.
Last year I camped out in my horse trailer, which was parked next barn to my barn, so I was pretty close to my little mare. Six nights I spent in there! It was damn cold, even though I had a little heater hooked up to the stable electrics, air bed, sleeping bag and a brand new HW Rambo rug over the top (boy that was great). It was lovely coming out into the new morning at 4am - so fresh and so much wildlife (barn owls, red kites). Still managed to miss the birth - reckon about 4.30am - woke when I heard a banging against a wall (a hoof?).
Not put her in foal this time though as she is an appaloosa and (with my boy) doesn't seem to be producing colour - first foal was roan with a few spots - second is white with fewer spots and flash markings up his legs and ears. Thought it wise not to go for 3rd time lucky though I am thinking of putting her to a quarter horse for next year (putting her to a solid should produce colour as she is a red leopard spot), if I don't sell her first. Anyway as a substitute I am looking at Mare Stare as having withdrawal symptoms!! And looking forward to seeing all your babies. KarynK has a baby due to my boy so hopefully I will get to see it. Good luck everyone!!!

Maybe when I was younger I could have handled "camping" out in a trailer or in the barn but something that "rustic" isnt my idea of fun anymore ... Maybe for you "young'ns" but when you get a little older, a nice bed during foal watch, inside, with all of the amenities close by, suits me just fine ... ;)

I am SO paranoid as well that during that 30-60 minutes when I nod off, when everything APPEARS to be fine, thats when she'll choose to foal and I wont be there

How do you handle something like a red bag delivery or other foaling complications, if you are that far away? I am hoping in the 2-3 minutes it takes me to sprint from the house and get footwear on, that I wont be too late. I just couldnt imagine being further away than that

Hopefully everyone has short foal watches, uncomplicated deliveries, and happy healthy mares and foals to show with pride after everything is said and done ... :)
