Lovely Northamptonshire again!

i bought a new saddlecloth on ebay and put it on my (very clean) horse and put the saddle on. the saddlecloth wasn't quite long enough so i took it off (hadn't even girthed it up), gave it a shake, sent it back to exchange. the seller has had a hissy fit and called me "dishonest" and "a cheat" because it has a few hairs on it. (she'd already left positive feedback though, thank god!)
apparently, according to her, Health and Safety won't let people handle stuff that's been next to an animal's body... is this right?
anyway, she's returning it again, and it's not really a problem, but i personally wouldn't mind if i bought such a thing and it had a couple of hairs on from being tried on briefly by someone else.
did you know this rule? do you always try new rugs or saddlecloths over immaculately clean sheets, or something?
i've sent back rugs to big saddlery companies after trying them briefly for fit and deciding the size isn't quite right, and never had a problem.

*a bit miffed at being insulted like that, tbh*
what do you think?

I think she is totally overreacting TBH, clearly she doesn't want to give you a refund and this is the best excuse she can come up with. The H&S stuff sounds like absolute rubbish, and as for calling you a 'cheat' and 'dishonest' that is just rude and out of order!!

As far as trying things goes, I tend to try it under the saddle on a saddle horse so you can see if it's going to be the right size. Either that or just hold it against and existing one that you know fits to compare. I don't usually bother trying it on the horse just in case it gets dirty!

she's being a right cow about it, tbh.
someone on here recommended her shop... how do i do a non-recommendation without it being defamatory?

no-one else needs this kind of s***!
oh, and i didn't want a refund anyway... i wanted either a different kind of saddlecloth if it was longer, or a pair of bentex breeches, as i'd already said!

I think that by stating you did not have a satisfactory transaction with xxxxxx is ok. Because it's true, and you are not defaming anyone.

I'll go against the grain here, I wouldn't expect to be sent a 'new' item only to find other horses hairs on it, in the same vein I wouldn't send an item back with my horses hair on it. If I was trying someting on that I might want to send back then yes, I would put a clean sheet underneath.
However I think calling you dishonest was a bit OTT !!

Talk about over reaction - our local tack shop will take rugs back if they have been tried on as long as they are clean (I'm sure my horse has left a couple of hairs on a rug before!)

H*rseH*aven... when i tried it on, i fully intended to keep it, that's the trouble. oh well, glad other people agree that it's a bit of an overreaction!

ooh really! ive bought saddlecloths from her and she has been nothing but 100% helpful, she even took the time to send me loads of pics when i couldnt decide on colour, and answered my endless questions on Sprenger bits!

What a shame she has been like that with you, Im shocked.

Ok I think calling you dishonest was maybe unfair but TBH I can see her point regarding the horsehair. So she has to give you your money back and then make sure she gets the horsehair off the item before she sells it to someone else. If I bought a new item for my horse and it had hair on I would be fuming. That would totally mess up the effort I make to use seperate brushes, rugs etc on individual horses. I think the H & S bit comes in if it is wet, dirty or has bodily fluids on it. If I was a seller and something like that came back I would be annoyed. I suppose the moral is, keep original packaging and always try on over a clean cloth, towel or rug.

Sounds like a complete overreaction to me. We've all tried stuff on our neds that doesn't fit and a few horse hairs on a horsey item hardly constitutes a health and safety risk!!! If you'd sent it back covered in scurf and sweat she may have had a point!!

Still, I'll make a point of trying stuff on mine over clean sheets or towels from now on.

I always try saddle cloths etc on horse with some polythene on horse so that hairs don't get on it. With rugs, I'll put another rug underneath before putting new rug on top and if any hairs got on new rug I'd painstakingly pick them all off before sending back. This is a bugbear of mine I'm afraid.

My local tack shop inspects all returns to make sure there is no hair on them and will not return if they find one. They tell you to try on with towels so I guess I am used to it. They too quote H&S but other shops are fine you always get the odd one I am afraid.

Bit of an over reaction! I have bought rugs in the past that have been new with a couple of hairs on and never complained - it is obvious to anyone with any common sense that this time of year horses are quite hairy so it is almost impossible to try on and keep completely hair free. If it was covered in mud/sweat or had hair all over it then she would have a point, indeed many rug repair people won't touch rugs unless they have been professionally cleaned, however I think she was being a bit of a stroppy mare in your case especially as you only wanted to swap for something else & not a refund!

BAAAAAAAAAA!

H&S refers to used goods, with dirt on them. I have to admit though that I would also spend the time pulling off every last hair. Seller does seem to be rather OTT here.
