Really hoping that the collective skills of HHO can help me help my friend who has frankly has had a rotten time of things over the past couple of years (both horsey and non horsey). Without going into too many details, she had to have her young horse pts just before Christmas after a long period with various injuries and other issues. She's had three horses fail the vetting in the past few months, and is understandably feeling very fed up with the whole thing. She's a grade 4 (I think?) para rider, so it definitely needs to be something safe (as safe as horses can be), but she's a kind and experienced rider, and although she keeps her horses at home, she has plenty of professional help she can call on when required.

Large pony/small horse - she's petite in build, also lacks the strength/muscle tone to be dealing with something too big/chunky. Perferably not too young - circa 8/9 would be good. To do regular/para dressage, plus hacking and generally to be her next best friend to do clinics, camps, competitions, etc. with. I think between us, we have have exhausted all the normal websites - Horsequest, Horsemart, H&H, Nfed, PC etc., so I am looking for suggestions of decent dealers, and horses who are advertised away from those sites. She's willing to travel, although we are based South Central England, and has an appropriate budget.

She's not a HHO member, but feel free to PM with any suggestions if you don't want to post here, and I will pass them on. Thank you in advance. :)

ETA she was competing at medium BD with her horse previous to the young horse, before he had to retire. So looking for something that can at least go to that level.

Have you been in touch with any RDA centres? Sometimes a group might get a horse with suitable temperament who is quite capable of going up the levels and therefore has more potential than is needed for the groups regular riders.

Thanks for your reply - that's an interesting idea. I am coincidentally meeting another friend on Tuesday who volunteers for her local RDA centre, so shall ask her what her thoughts are on that option.

What kind of budget does she have? I'm seeing these sorts go for 10k +, as a bit of talent and quite safe always sells!

I obviously don't want to give away her exact budget (in fact I don't even know it!!), but yes that's affordable. However, we are probably not talking several multiples of £10k plus. We have similar horse types and aspirations, so I'm fairly comfortable that her budget will cover what she is looking for. I bought my current mare around the same time she bought her young horse and we were in the same sort of market then. Hope that helps. x

Local RDA groups could be a good shout. I know a few of the volunteers at my local one, and often they have horses that don't work out for various reasons, but would still suit a para rider.

301062 on horse quest £19,500 but might be worth an offer if suitable, he sounds just right for your friend

Thank you - I am not sure if he's new onto HQ as I hadn't seen him, but have only recently started looking again what with Christmas etc. He's definitely the right calibre of horse. I'm only concerned that he might chunk up too much for her once he fully matures given he is only 5 now. I have messaged the seller and got some videos which I will forward on to my friend in the morning - she's far less of a night owl than me. :)

Have a look at Kirsten Mayne Dressage, I can vouch for her as a dealer. She tends to sell pretty high end dressage horses so might be above budget.

If she wants a green cob/Irish type then Chilver House in Norfolk have some great ones in but they are very rough and ready. I have a brilliant cob from them.

Not in your age range, but have you seen 301042 on Horsequest?

Has your friend seen ref 291115 on HQ? Sounds like a good sort that might be quite useful
I like the sound of this one on HQ 292511. 14.3 Connie gelding 8 years

Thank you all - I will pass all the suggested adverts on - reluctant to comment on them specifically here, as that would make me a bit uncomfortable as different horses suit different people, etc. Will also check out the dealer suggestions - agree that KM may be a little high end, and selling a little too much horse power for what is needed by my friend.

I would be cautious with this one

Thank you - that reinforces what I found via googling etc.

Have you thought about approaching some professional dressage yards - they may know of something appropriate for para dressage.

Showing yards and horses, the show horses tend to be very schooled, and fairly bomb proof ( I'm not talking about riding club types more county level types) there's a couple on horse quest but I'd approach some of the bigger name yards.

Thank you to those who responded and also PMd me. I just wanted to update that my friend had her 4th potential horse vetted today successfully. I really hope this is a lovely new start for her - she very much deserves it. And to all those looking for months and months and months, hopefully your new horse is out there somewhere. xx
