Just wondering if anybody has had TTT Knee Surgery and if they found riding afterwards a problem? I had it last year and after two dislocations, I'm finding it hard to keep balance and put weight through to my heel. Just looking for possible solutions if anyone has/is in the same situation ..

Thanks :)

Had a lateral release done and scrap....find that I HAVE to use the cross trainer at home to keep the muscles sound around my knee.

Cannot be any more help...other than to say that knee trouble is pants! hope you are on the mend quickly after the op

Not had the specific surgery but I am an ex physio, please note all of the information below is from personal experience and for information and as I have not assessed you I can't give you advice!

One of the things that often gets neglected in the rehab is 'proprioception' it is key to balance and basically tells your brain where your limbs are at all times. To train it up you need to bombard the brain with signals, one of the simplest ways is standing on the affected leg only while brushing teeth, washing up, grooming. As you get better you can stand on a pillow to make it more challenging. Make sure you bend the knee a little bit.

The trouble with the heel down will most likely be due to some tightening of muscles etc. Need to do some regular stretching (several times a day).

That said I am an ex-physio and I would speak to one who can properly assess you! :) you can't do much damage with some balancing exercises as long as you have something like a sink to grab hold of!

I had knee surgery three years ago had three pins put in i took me a good few months to get my balance took nearly 2 years for pain to go!! Am currently in plaster as i had a fall at wkend and fractured the same knee again but thank goodness i don't need surgery again

Thank-you, that is definitely something that I can try, literally when i'm riding i have to think constantly about what my left leg is doing (not helpful when your trying to train up a youngster!!)
(Attempting to get referred back to my consultant but having to go through the GP as he wanted xrays to see if i had done any damage after the two dislocations - time consuming!)

Thanks for your advice!

Sorry to hear that, knee injuries are the worst. Two operations later still not sorted, hoping for no more as its so time consuming and takes it out of you.

Hope you are back riding soon!

I had the fulkerson op with TTT and i think it was the worst thing i ever did!! I think id rather the constant dislocated knee!

I find I don't have the strength I used to when riding but balance and stretching etc is ok, but I underwent intense physio and rehab for months and still have some kind of rehab now and its been 18 months since my op. Lots of hard (and painful!) work but means I can kinda ride :)

My knee still isnt right (if anything its been worse since the op-it just doesnt dislocated 50 times a day now!) and I'm off back to the surgeon soon.

Really work on your physio exercises and find exercises you can do all the time just about anywhere and it does help. Building the muscle up around the knee helps stabilise it more and does make it a bit easier. They do say its a 2-3 year recovery from this surgery so take it slowly and exercise/stretch as much as you can and fingers crossed for you that yours will have worked :)

Thanks - the physio is painful, at the beginning it was agonising! It was never that painful after my first op but dont think that was classed as major surgery, either way it didnt work! I'll be happier tomorrow when i get the xray results back as since the last dislocation and since the swelling has gone down I've noticed a difference in my shin bone near the knee. Once i know its ok and not serious then more physio seems the only solution! Damn knees - just glad to know I'm not the only one who has these problems! :)
