Tummy troubles!!

Hi, just after a bit of advice/reassurance!! Ive got a 8 year old welsh sec d who has had a personality change over the last few months. Hes gone from being my safe plod can do anything with him to not wanting to work, grumpy and just not being his general self. Ive had his teeth done saddle checked and his back done twice and none showed any problems. Hes very twitchy when you touch his tummy, blows out rly bad wen is girth up (which he never used to do) aggitated wen getting on to the point where he bronked me off onto concrete. Bronks when put into canter and wont settle, has got very spooky evan past stuff he walks past everyday. Im thinkin gastric ulcers has any1 elses horse had any of these symptons? Also he has very bad gas and looks like his tummy is swollen. Advice please apologies 4 the long post :(
 
I would seriously suspect ulcers and have him scoped or you can order equine omneprazole straight from America and try him on it and see if you get any improvements. If no change then hind gut acidosis/ulcers which can't be seen on a scope and need different treatment.

You could try having a trug of water with bicarb of soda added as well as a trug of plain and see if this helps a little in the mean time.

Just be cautious OP it is illegal to import that drug. It does not come from USA it comers from india check out the small print .
Omeprazole is prescription only in the states as well as here and for very good reasons. The website is setup to make you think you are buying in the states

He is fed spillers low cal balencer with a high fibre chaff and a scoop of pink powder put in the last few days. He has a haynet over night but its a double haynet as he is very greedy
 
Popsdosh thats not the info I had from my vet who recommended it and I had no issues...!

Is he stabled a lot Ann Marie? Don't bother with pink powder, read the ingredients loads of fillers and rubbish.
 
Oh hun this really does sound like ulcers!!! if he is in good condition they still get ulcers, mine was fat shiney and thought was in good health but was full of ulcers!!! I used gastro plus and have never looked back!!!!! ulcers are very very painful so he isnt been naughty just in major pain!!! good luck and keep us posted how you get on xxxxxx

Your vet could be struck off for recommending an unlicenced product when a licenced product is available to supply a prescription for .It is strictly illegal to import any unlicened drug into UK, USA or most countries. They get away with it by bombarding the customs system with packages thats why they have a very quick replacement for non arriving packages. If you carefully read their website you will see some countries they wont supply to this is because they have very tough surveillance for these products coming in.
.Guess you would be happy to buy your own drugs from India that are untested or licenced each to their own.
I also bet your vet wont be very happy that you stated on a public forum that he is suggesting you break the law! By all means if you want to buy the stuff yourself and take the risk but dont recommend to others on a public forum.

The vet is coming out they are coming out tommoro!! I haven't waited months he only got worse the last few week, I am not a owner who would leave my horse in pain to save myself a vets bill!! I cant keep him out 24/7 because like I have said he is a very good doer and is already overweight

I am not getting at you OP, just a general comment for people who keep horses, when things creep up gradually we tend to react slowly, my mare was out on loan with instructions to feed 1 kg per day. They stopped feeding as she "is puting on weight", and they even put shoes on her a week before the foal arrived! I had seen her and advised vet, was assured he was coming in a few days!
But keeping stabled is not going to help if it is ulcers, have you consider paddock paradise?
PS a physio should have asked for vet referral, there are good reasons for this. Again I am not getting at you OP, but you have to try to be objective, I know on HHO we always say, teeth, back, saddle, but really, if in doubt, find out the cause by asking a good equine vet.

Paddock paradise? What is that? He has always been stabled at night I've had him since he was 18months old and this is the first time he has every been ill its hard because he is a genuine horse so when something is wrong he wont show it in a major way so that's why I had all the usual checks done first - saddle, teeth and back. It's only the last few weeks his personality has really changed and that's why now the vet is coming out. Im at my wits end with horses ny other boy is only just on the mend after surgery on his leg after a field injury and now my other is ill :(
 
Paddock paradise is quite simply a track system which allows the horse to graze 24/7 but he has to work hard to get his grub as the field is fenced off rather than open. It is the same idea as strip grazing, but much improved as he has to walk round the field rather than staying in one place all day and stuffing himself.
