Hi I am stressing about a lump which is on my 16 year old mares jaw, she is in the vet hospital and x rays have ruled out abscess, infection etc. They think it could either be a harmless cyst or there is a possibilty it may be a malignant tumor

though they are not keen to take a biopsy as they say it may leave her open to infection.
Can anyone tell me if it is common for cysts to grow from the bone or with it being in the bone is it ore likely to be a tumor?

Gah! I just typed an essay and I lost it somehow so here is my scaled down respone

Well I would assume it is a melanoma and I would not worry a great deal about it. My mare was also recently diagnosed with one on her neck and my vet said it could be ten years before it caused her major problems. (hers is by her artery, airway and esophogus unfortunately)

Scientists are even studying the grey horse becasue of how well they survive melanomas and they feel they may hokd the key to surviving cancer. I cannot remember the exact percentage but I think 2/3 of all grey horses over ten will get one (or many) and they are rarely a major worry and often grow very slow. Just keep your eye on growth and if anything concerns you contact the vet otherwise I was told to just keep enjoying her and doing as you have been.

Not sure about the dun to grey thing with melanoma but the fact she is grey now would make me feel it is likley

Thank you for you info, eventually the Vet decided to take a small biopsy of the tissue and has sent it to the lab for testing. Fingers and toes crossed.
She will hopefully get home this wknd. Such a worry as if it develops any further I am scared it will prevent her from eating

Can I ask how long your Mare has her 'lump' for and have you noticed much growth in it since the date of diagnosis?
Thank you so much
