I am already on the Facebook page, just wondered if anyone could give me a quick hand.
Horse in questions been on Danilon for about 9 months after over the counter stuff stopped helping.
He's recently had a break from working (I say work he hacks lightly to help with mobility as advised by my vets) he's had his shoes off and I've stopped the Danilon to give his system a break.
I notice he's very much sound in the field, trots or canters over daily to be checked and fed. So I'd like to try him on turmeric now and see if I can do away with the danilon.
Can someone advise on how much of the oil, pepper and turmeric to start with?
Also is it best/easiest to make a paste, cookie type things or just add daily to his feed?
If I make treats to hand feed how do I keep them? And do they work as well with the pepper which I think needs to be freshly ground
Thanks x

I have two who are on it - one is 17.2hh wb the other is a 14hh arab. They both get a small cup of micronized linseed (for the oil element) 10 twists of black pepper and 2 x 25mi scoops of turmeric added to their feed, which is a fair amount of soaked beet pulp/grass pellets/Fast Fibre mix. It takes a while for them to get used to it so best to taper it up to those levels, but they do accept it well when they are used to it. The wb is 1/10 lame (djd) without it, sound with, the arab is 35 and stiff through her SI joint. She still has half a sachet of danilon as well to keep her comfortable.
The pepper has to be freshly ground so that the volatile oils haven't degraded, not sure how that would last in treats.

My old girl gets a tablespoon turmeric in each feed (2 feeds daily) with 8 twists pepper and a 1/2 mug of ground linseed each feed. I make two feeds up a time as not always up both ends of day. Still works for her. In fact she has gone from retired on 2 bute a day to being on the turmeric combined with Super Fen and no bute and is the best she has been in a long time.

Thanks both. I've already purchased some coconut oil so will try that first.
Where do you both source your turmeric as I read that the quality can vary hugely?

Our local Tesco is a bit rubbish! Unless it's bread, milk or eggs they don't sell it ;)
I've looked on eBay but there are several different sellers and I can't see the cucurmin (??) levels- think it needs to be 2 or 3% is that right?

My 20+ yrs old arthritic mare hasn't needed any pain relief since going onto Tumeric (was on bute daily), I buy Tumeric from my local cash n carry, a large catering tub for under a fiver, I give it in sandwich form, marg for the oil, 8 twists of black pepper and approx a tsp of Tumeric, all of mine love it, my mare is now back in light work, eating nothing but hay and a daily sarnie.
Equally good for people, I haven't looked back since I went on it, can now tack up myself and ride for longer than twenty mins, so nice to have my hands and knees back in use (arthritis)

There is a very long thread re. The Global Herbs one and the TUG people seem to think it's not as effective due to the freshness of the pepper as JillA mentions. However several posters used it with success (some added extra pepper freshly)

I feed my 14.2 on turmeric he has a clicky stifle, he has a big table spoon of turmeric, 8 grinds of pepper and then linseed oil to make a paste and he has it in his tea. He still clicks but not as much and has been on it for three months now, he also has a very very shiny coat. I buy my turmeric from a supermarket in Rotherham called pak 800grms for £5.00
