Hi all, was just wondering how many on here are feeding turmeric, for what reason and have you seen any effects, good or bad? :)

I bought some today, along with black pepper and oil, horse had his first feed this evening which he actually ate, he is just about to have steroid treatment for a sacroiliac problem and it is one of the things suggested that may help, I have no idea if a) it will help but it has to be worth trying or b) that he will eat it once I have increased the level from a tiny amount.

I feed a heaped tablespoon to my horse every evening, along wih a tablespoon of wet feed, oil and a few twists of freshly ground black pepper.
I started giving it to him because I read it was a good anti inflammatory and he's recently been diagnosed with arthritis in his hocks. I don't know how effective it is in relieving swelling in arthritic joints. He certainly seems much better but that is more likely to be due to the steroid injections in his hocks. He's also given MSM & glucosamine in his breakfast. But turmeric is cheap and he loves the mixture so I'll keep using it even if there's no real scientific evidence it works.

Interesting, thanks :)

One of the arthritic Cushing ponies at the yard has been on turmeric fir about 4 months and the difference is amazing; he would barely trot before but now is like a different pony, he gallops round the field very happily!

Now all horses on yard are on it! :)

Oh no you have started me off !!.
I have all of my horses and dogs as well as myself on it .
I have arthritis, graves disease, psoriasis etc, I have gone from major painrelief daily to none .
One of my dogs age 8, has arthritis in all joints of all legs , she has gone from 25mg metacam a day to none .
Pony , hard life causing stiffness through his back and shoulder. now out competing at MGA full pelt regularly, hunter trials etc .
You have to know the best ways to feed it and also have access to good quality stuff . It must be 3% curcumin . There is a group on Facebook called Turmeric user group. Run by an Aussie vet and helpers . Amazing info on there and helpful people .
Thanks to this cheap effective antiinflammatory we are getting our lives back .

I feed it to my mare and have done for a while. She's just been diagnosed with the start of arthritis and I'm hoping the turmeric is helping slow the progress. The vet didn't mention anything against it when I told him she was on it.

I was recommended it on here recently, to be fed with freshly ground black pepper. The dog was on it for ages. Do people feed it with linseed oil or dried linseed? Am off to the feed shop today so answers gratefully received.

I use it on my highland. He is not stiff/arthritic, but hoped it might help to reduce the fluidy bits he has on his knees (didn't think it really would as have tried everything, but was worth a try ;) ). He really likes it, but haven't noticed any difference so far, except that he wee'd alot when we first started to use it. I must say that I have had to reduce the amount I use because I didn't think the oil was good for his waistline, so only use a little drop of oil now.

Mine is having 3 tablespoons a day with 8 - 10 grinds of black pepper and a cup of micronised linseed. He's been diagnosed with severe arthritis in his hocks. I don't know how much it's helped yet, he's been on it about a month but he had hock injections and tildren and has a glucosamine supplement so not sure what is or isn't helping!!

The most common oils to give it with are olive oil, coconut oil or linseed.

I have three of my four on it as well as myself, I feed it to the horses in sandwich form, using marg as the oil, they love it and my 20yr old arthritic mare has not needed bute for over six months now and is back in light work, I can now tack up myself again and can ride for a lot longer than twenty mins.
I just buy tumeric from the cash n carry and it really has worked wonders for us, although I believe if the has ulcers it's not suitable

23 year old on tumeric, he has 2 tbsp plus 23 turns of fresh pepper, and 2 tbsp of olive oil. Got yo be a cold pressed oil and pepper must be freshly milled. Yes linseed fine too.

I have started to use linseed meal for the horses but the dogs have olive oil. Saves a fortune on bute and metacam for my lot . As long as it is fed properly with pepper and oil in some form . There are good suppliers and bad. Some extrude the curcumin which is the active part of the spice and so make it ineffective. It is always worth making sure you get the supplies with the magic bit in it . Check out the site suggested any problems pm me and \i can help with info from there if you dont habe facebook .

I have a 20 year old on it. We started her on it in the vague hope that it would slow the progression of her melanomas. I don't think it has changed them much, but we suddenly had a new horse on our hands! FAR more active and forward. So now my two endurance horses are on it as a preventive.

I see that Amazon sells turmeric in bulk bags of a kilo for cooking. Would that work or does it have to be processed differently?
