I'd turn away for the winter too(but just my opinion) I'd still be handling him daily though but have him living out as you might find yourself with a bit of a wild beast when it comes to next year lol
lol.. he is the most calmest youngster i have ever met, backin was not a problem lunged with tack laid over his back walked around like it and has not put a foot wrong out hacking walks on fields not even in shoool i love him lol
I asked thi question and was in the same position this timelast year. I decided not too and carried on doing little bits and pieces with her over the winter. I then got a friend on her at the beginning of the year that was astounded at how much growing she still had to do. So in Feb this year I turned her away till July and wished that I had done it when I first asked.
If in your situation now I would turn her away for the winter and bring her back into wokr in the Spring.
I'd expect him to make around that height but maybe a little more. I read on here if you measure from front of knee to coronet band it will give approx. adult height e.g if it is 16' he will make about 16 hands 16.5 inch around 16.2, if that helps you at all
Probably just over 16hh but really depends on the breeding. My girl is a warmblod and never seems to stop growing. She was 16.2hh when I bought her back into work in July and is now just over 16.3hh!!!!
lol he is big now, 15.3 just want him to push to the 16.2 h mark then he can stop with me because i like 6ft lol tall lassy i am lol stand him in some compost and not let him move
he is warmblood x id we think but not sure, he was from the horse sales when he was 9 months old so never saw the parents but spoke to owner and he bought the mare in foal and she was a warmblood 16.2
I would just take it really steady with him, you could compromise and just do a little bit with him rather than turning him away and not continuing with the education he as already been provided with.
WB are slow developers, and you may find that he may not do much growing now but will have a little spurt during next summer. The bigger the horse, the slower I think you should take it, but as with age comes strength and indeed height, you may be wise to remind him what its all about every now and again, seen as you have already backed him and is going forward under saddle.
The important thing is not to expect too much, or get carried away, just because he seems laid back and accepting what you ask, this is very good but don't abuse this. I would personally carry on with handling him, ground work, walking out in traffic, getting him indipendant ready for when you are riding him on more regular basis...when you start hacking him out properly, which I presume you intend to do next year at some point. However I would tack him up and just have a potter about in the ménage once a week, for no more than a 5 minutes, just to keep him in a simple routine yet he's still got that time to be a baby as its not an every thing, but its all personal preference and it also depends on the individual horse and of course the rider/trainer and keeping an even happy balance.
If he is 15.2 15.3 at 3yr and months now, then he will certainly be around 16.2 this time next year, you'll may notice that he huge nobly knees and gangly hocks, or slightly cow backed..which is a sign that they have a lot of growing to do both length ways and in height.
I'm of the opinion that turning them away completely isn't a brilliant idea. I'd much rather turn them away partially and only work them twice a week max so that the handling side keeps up and they don't entirely forget how to behave.
My personal view is to keep them gently ticking over unless teething or really bum up.
With Chancer he did have a few months of not being ridden due to teeth and growth spurts, but still did ground work as he is the type that is easily bored if not doing anything.
Maybe you could try doing three short sessions a week, short hack, short schooling session and a groundwork session - this worked very well with my boy and I am doing the same with my other youngster - bit of variety and nothing too hard work.
