When I had lessons i was told it was easier to start with turns about the forehand rather than on them. We had a road cone as a marker. Ride up to the cone and whilst the horse is still in walk and its shoulders are level with the cone ask for the turn - maybe use someone on the ground to reinforce your leg aids by asking the horses quarters to move over. You have a marker (the cone) to help you. Make sure you ride out of it straight after you have done it. Turn the horses head to help the horse. Keep practising that. Both reins. Then you can progress to turn on the forehand using the cone again as a marker. Eventually you can lose the cone and do it in your normal schooling lessons.
