Hi all, in a bit of a dilemma, so my new how’s (ex OTTB) has been on box rest for the past 3 1/2 months due to a fractured front pedal bone, he’s had 5 mins walking a day for the past 3 weeks, the vet saw him 2 weeks ago and said another 2-3 weeks box rest then he can go out, my plan is to give him some sedation and let him out for an hour in the afternoon when all the others have come in, so he will be on his own, has anyone any thoughts on this or experience letting out after a long period of box rest?? And best way to do it?? Thanks

A nice dose of sedalin - enough to take more than just the edge off but not enough to completely sparko him then out him out with a quiet friend, if he has ever been in a field (not sure which hard you got him from) he will not have been out alone. Let him wake up in the field and repeat for a few days just until it's not exciting any more then chuck him out awake and walk away. The less you see the less you will fret ?

I would definitely use some sedaline and have the other horses in .
I usually turn out hungry I put boots on them and wear my crash cap.

hi thanks, he was with Ian Williams from July 20 till I brought him in September, before that he was with
F O’Brian so not sure about turn out, not really got a quite friend as both my others are not quite, didn’t know if to leave them out and get it over and done with or gently does it, yes I do fret and I’m going to try and leave him to it ? I’ve got Relaquin from the vet and have used it on him with really good results x

Hi thanks, yes definitely crash hat and sedation, yes was going to turn out before tea and put boots on, don’t know wether to leave others in or not, one is 25 so do worry about him getting over excited ?

My horse was on box rest for 3 months. He was given sedalin for turn out but also I erected a stable plus size pen on the grass with tape and posts close to the stable block. This meant he could not take off and do any serious damage. I gradually increased the size of his pen when I was sure he was less liable to go nuts. I would not allow him to go out when other horses were on the paddocks as as at this time of year they are prone to exploding and setting everyone else off. Going out hungry is also a bonus. Good luck.
