After 12 weeks box rest weve more xrays tomorrow and fingers crossed my boy will finally be able to go out albeit in a paddock the size of 4 stables!
He fractured his radius and has been cross tied for 6 weeks then normal box rest for 6 weeks and daily short walks which have been ummm .... interesting!
He takes to sedation really well and even 1ml of sedalin dopes him for hours.
Would you give him sedalin for turnout for the first few days as I know he will freak but then Im also worried he may do more damage if doped up as it really does effect him. Also he will only be out for about 10 mins at first then building it up.
Thanks for any replies

Thanks, was he really dopey when you turned him out? My friend thinks Jay will do himself more damage doped as it effects him so much. I gave him 1ml for shoeing last week and he spat it out and was still spaced out. 1ml is for about a 12hh pony and he is 16.1hh!

Same as madhector, mine was sedated for turnout after his tendon injury. Would not have dared to turn out without it.
Hope all goes well tomorrow. I have everything crossed for you both

Sorry to sound totally thick but when you turned out sedated, did he still run round?
Leahurst said he had to have a tiny tiny paddock the size of 4 stables so theres not enough room for him to run but I reckon he will still explode.

My daughter's horse damn nearly killed me a few weeks ago after just 10 days of box rest! I made a mental note that next time I will try Global Herbs "Turnout". No idea if it's any good, but generally their stuff is.

im so glad to here your boys coming on well have been wondering how hes been doing since your last update.
we were talking about whether or not to sedate my horse when he can finally be turned out too.
i think mine will need sedating as when we had the snow the other day i walked him in the school. he was great going down the school , he had a little chat over the wall to his girl friend ect, but really got the hump when i walked him as he was dying for a roll and a run when he felt the sand under his toes.
but then again as my sister pointed out if hes doped he won't feel his leg as much, so could actually do more harm than good.

if hes going into a grass paddock he may well suprise you as he will be missing the grass.
the only thing i can suggest is you know your horse best, go with your gut instinct on the day.
please let us know how you get on, and i hope everthing goes smoothly for you both.
ps you may need some rescue remedy for yourself and remember to keep breathing otherwise you'll faint (lol).

Could you hand graze him for a while in his new paddock before giving him full freedom. It may be worth having him on a lunge line and gradually increase his range - you would be in a position to gauge his mood and have some element of control. Appreciate you would not want his leg to get tangled so you may not want to risk it. A weeny bit of sedative may be worth it otherwise. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks everyone.
I was hoping to hand graze him daily but we havent even managed a walk off the yard as one minute he walks calmly and then the next he just explodes and one false move could have shattered his leg. Im absolutely dreading it, the more I think about it the more I think he is going to have to be doped.
Storm123, that happened to me. The first day I walked him out I took him in the school thinking its soft, enclosed and safe and he went mad, bronking and half passing, it took 2 of us to get him out.
Fingers crossed all goes well with the xrays, he should have been out 2 weeks ago but the xrays shown then that his leg still had 5mm to heal.
Thanks everyone
