Turn out rug slipping back

I just bought a new turnout rug for my pony. It's basically just a rain sheet.
She is a 5'6/5'9 but she is very chunky so I have to go up to the 5'9 to ensure it fits around her shoulders (she so far has been my hardest horse to find rugs for!).

The first night I put it on in the morning I went up and the clip had broken and the rug had slipped back (I just thought it had moved because the clip broke (she is a thug with rugs so wasn't surprised it was already damaged)). Second morning same thing. So I think the rug is slipping back.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? it seems it's possibly too big for her but when I put it on it looks fine and if I go down a size they don't fit her shoulders (I've tried lots of different makes over the past few months and just come to the conclusion to go up a size).

Someone said about putting some darts in the neck but I'm unsure if it's too big or too small if shes breaking the buckle...but it could slip back then break the buckle because it's too big. :(
 
If the rug is slipping back its too big. If its a classic neck, it needs to sit a few inches in front of the withers and the end of the rug should lie at the top of the tail.
Make sure the chest and surcingle straps are done up tight enough but with enough room to slide your hand between the chest and belly.

If the rug's gaping around her neck, it's too big. You should be able to put your hand down the front without feeling any tightness. Often, people buy a size up to compensate for a large shoulder but instead look for makes that do an extra neck which gives you an extra 3'' around the chest. Amigo, Bucas, and I think, Fal do extra neck sizes. Alternatively, try rugs from friends with chunky horses to see which make fits your pony best.
A rug that doesn't sit properly on the withers can cause rubs and pressure points. so while its a shame to have a rug that's no use, its cheaper than paying for physio.
You could try putting darts in but the length may make the rug pull anyway if its too long.
 
Try a different make. I have this problem with my horse; some makes of rug just slip down/back on his shoulders. I get on best with Swish Equestrian because they are higher around the shoulders/neck so don't slip. Most others just gape around the neck because of the cut.

When I put it on it doesn't gape around the front so I was surprised it slipped. I bought the JHL because I was told they are similar to Mark Todd fit which fit her in the 5'9 nicely.

I'll take it back up tonight and have a look at it on her and see if it's too big.

I have tried a number of different makes on her and just finding I have to go up a size to get the fit. Mark Todd 5'9 fit her well, along with Wheatherbeeta. Horseware doesn't fit her shoulders at 5'6 or 5'9 and shires fit at 5'9 (all body wise look fine at 5'6 just shoulder wise don't fit).

I bought this rug at a tack sale and when I got it, it had darts in the shoulder...which is making me wonder if they had the same problem...
 
I have this same problem with my cob. I found with her that shires fit her true size (5'9) really well she gas a 6'0 amigo turnout that fits her well but cant use masta as they jus dont fit round her shoulders!
 
does it have a cotton or nylon lining, the cotton linings always creep back with the hair, so i prefer nylon linings, you can stitch this on if you have any nylong lying around,
